  • Issues with fcp and Canon xh-a1?

Posted by Pete Peterson on June 12, 2008 at 6:01 am

After a lot of research I think the Canon XH-A1 suits my needs very well and meets the budget requirements. It’s either this or the Sony HVR-V1U.

After checking for compatibility issues there seems to be some with fcp. I’ve got 6.0.3, MacPro, Leopard, and everything is up to date.

I’ve searched this forum and others and still can’t seem to find out if there is a workflow that really works with a Canon xh-a1 using a batch setup for Log and Capture.

Do I need an external card to do this? Can it be done on firewire as with my old and trusty trv-950? What setting would I use?

I have to admit at this stage I’m not very familiar with HDV, etc. but any comments would certainly be appreciated.

    Hello Pete,

Are you gonna edit in HDV?
    Do you actually have issue?

    Regards,

Yes, thats my intention. I don’t have the camera yet but from other posts it appears that there are some problems. MY biggest problem is that I’ve been shooting and editing in SD for years and now have to get myself and my gear updated. I’m way behind the curve.

    Pete,

I’ve been working with that camera for a year now, in a couple of different workflows, I have no or very few problems with it. It is a great tool.

I don’t normally batch capture with it, mostly I capture to PreRes via FireWire, then re-name the clips.

Note that when you capture from it, you must set the playback standard to HDV, it defaults to Auto, and FCP won’t see it.

    Great camera.

    Have a wonderful day.

Thanks Chris. Can you tell me what the workflows are? Are you capturing the entire tape at one time?

Like this, only I think someone mentions an easier way to rename the clips:

Been using the XH-A1 for about a year with few issues (all use error, really) but I have found I preferred shooting with the HVR-Z1U as it had more “hardware” switches for camera controls such as audio input select, etc. Not sure how the V1U compares in this regard. On the whole, I don’t like digging through menus on a shoot.

But again, the Canon has been as good as any other HDV cam I’ve used when loading to FCP.

    Cheers,
    S
