Perfect! Ya know, I was almost certain this was already in FCP as I remember when it was added a few years back and thinking that it was a great addition. But I never looked the feature up and going through the manual the only thing for “Draft” was concerning rendering. Thanks again.

Thanks for the tips. This is for a really quick project that has lots of little single-digit numbers and names that I’d like to use the effect for which is why I’d like to avoid using anything more complicated that slapping a plug or expression on it.

I’d prefer to use a handwriting font, but have ordered a Wacom tablet and will most-likely do it by hand with Vector Paint. Oh well.

Seems like a common request. I’m suprised Adobe doesn’t have a solution.

Anyone know if Motion does this? I could build a little library of clips and bring them into AE.

This is an interesting topic. For the last couple of years, I’ve been exporting out without fields for DVD as (correct me if I’m wrong), it can play progressive. I shoot and capture my footage as 30fps progressive and composite in AE as 29.97fps fields off. Am I doing a “bad thing.” Everything has always looked great.

What’s your workflow? Here’s mine on a typical project:

If using video I shoot 30p
if combining 3D I output to single-frame IFF files at 30fps.
AE comps at 29.97 no interlacing
Export either as Animation with no interlacing
Either directly import DVD Studio Pro or convert to MPEG-2 with Compressor.

Now not being at my main studio right now I can’t check my settings, but doesn’t DVDSP import progressive files and leave them as such?

And just to toss my $.02 onto the pile. If you’re looking for inspiration (and who of us hasn’t) – looking at film title sequences is a great place. I’ll rent DVD’s and if I like the titles, rip it to a small Quicktime movie and keep in in an inspiration folder. I also teach so these come in handy when talking about a particualr sequence or effect.

Another creat source is all the demo reels from motion houses out there. There even a couple sites I believe that have lists of links to motion houses with good reels. Many innovative spots can be found on these reels.

How do you make new media? Export?

  • This is an intersting thread. For example, when I am working on an Flash project, it’s always assumed (rightly or not) that I’ll be handing over the .fla’s. With AE or Maya, I don’t think I would feel comfortable handing over file. I think it may be that we consider motions graphics work to be “fixed” projects, whereas with something like Flash a client is almost always going to be adding or tweaking something over time and generally without my input. It’s like with Flash they’re buying the code and with AE etc it’s the final product. Or something.

With any project like this, I think the problem starts to arise when you are using various fonts, plug-ins etc. Not to mention, what client is going to make sense out of my my huge convoluted AE file that consists of precomp after precomp!

OK, I’m an idiot in two threads simultaneously. I could have sworn I was in the After Effects forum. Sorry. I think the drag-and-drop method works in FCP as well. Can someone clarify?

I’ll start paying attention to where I am now.

  • I wasn’t paying attention to which forum I’m in. I would do the whole thing in After Effects and bring it in to lay over the footage in FCP. You could also do this in Motion.
