I reckon that by and large we would want to be creating new Events based on where we want particular jobs to be stored, do you think? I doubt that we’d generally want to have a plurality of Events for one job.

Interestingly if you deselect the full overlap option and then try to add a transition without having sufficient handles you only get the option to cancel or use full overlap. You don’t get the option to shorten the transition – which is the behaviour we have come to expect from our NLE’s.
But I should have read the manual before posting … 🙁

Thanks, Dave – there was a magic key after all.
But I doubt there’s an answer to my question of why anyone would want that as a default (!) behaviour!!!!!!! (Except of course someone who knows nothing about non-linear editing and wouldn’t understand handles.)

But seriously, I can’t imagine anybody at any time editing any kind of project on any galaxy know or unknown would ever in a million light years want this behaviour with transitions.

OK, it doesn’t work that way if you can be bothered to drag a transition out of the Transitions menu – but seriously!!!!!!
Cmd/T on a transition will absolutely, definitely ripple your timeline for you and that cannot be right. Surely!? Who thought anyone would want it to behave like this? It’s madness!

In Adobe Photoshop, the most professional image manipulation software on the planet, you still can’t use special characters at all and you have to resort to the copying-and-pasting-from-TextEditor route.

What do you mean by capturing a still frame, David? Do you mean importing a still? In which case, yes, it’s exactly the same.

This is a really great resource all of a sudden – the best of the COW as we’ve come to know it, directed full-on at getting to grips with FCPX. I’ve already learned some truly eye-opening stuff.
I have to say, I might sneak back to the other place occasionally to see what’s cooking on the speculation/indignation front – boy, was that fun for a couple of months!

Cmd/Opt/V is what you need to paste (you just said Cmd/Opt/C) – works for me.
You can also do it from the Edit/Paste Effects menu option.
It sucks that you can only paste all effects though, as you say!

One question about what you’ve done here – why have you made folders to put your Keyword Collections in? Isn’t this just duplicating the same thing? Surely a Keyword Collection is a “folder” in most practical senses? (OK, I know it’s not exactly that but for the purposes of this discussion …)
Based on your starting point, this is where I have now reached with my media (and compound clips aka “sequences” of old!) organized by Keyword, which effectively makes them folders.
So instead of your system of having a folder called Commercial A with a Keyword Collection inside, I just have the keyword collection which in turn would house all the different versions of Commercial A. I would then use folders to house Commercials A-D or whatever.
Or am I missing something about your approach? (I wouldn’t be surprised!)
Really great tip on the Compound Clip thing – it’s suddenly opened up the whole thing for me so I can definitely see my way through to a workable workflow – for my needs at least.
