Yeah, I have to say the best plan seems to be to try and avoid being guided by what Apple tell you is the right way to work and find the strategies that make the most sense for your particular workflow whatever it might be. There are a lot of seriously daft suggestions about workflows in the manual and the Events business tops the list for me.
Very pleased to have found a working method that makes sense to me, thanks to Tony.

BTW the reason I am suggesting you modify the Custom template rather than any of the other built-in ones which already have tweakable parameters is that I haven’t been able to find any others that actually have the text entry box in the Inspector pane.

OK, cool – this text input box was not available in the one I was using namely Centered. I think I’ll send Custom to Motion and give it another name starting with “a” so it’s at the top of the list in future!
Annoying that you have to select a text template anyway though – you should just be able to select the text go and go right away. Another iMovie legacy, I’m afraid.

I think for most of us this is causing huge amounts of unnecessary frustration – but then we know what we are doing and we’ve been doing it for a while. I can’t help thinking the new language is aimed at the other audience, hence the fact that it’s been rendered (someone’s idea of) less “technical”.

I’d have to disagree – in FCP7 I have my audio dissolves mapped to a single key – instant result. Surely that was a quicker way of doing it?

I don’t see any way of inputting text in the Inspector tab – it’s not referred to in the manual – I did look in the Inspector tab first off just out of habit and couldn’t find anything there.
No doubt my stupidity again.

I think Gary you’re talking about breaking apart Compound Clips which is something quite different.
Certainly that’s what Shift/Cmd/G is for.
But I could well be wrong!
