  • [Jeremy Garchow] “the Color board. Perhaps it isn’t for everyone, and it’s not the best or most logical of interfaces when comparing it to color theory, but it does give many options and the quality is pretty damn good; much better than anything that resided inside of FCP Legacy.”

OK so the quality is better than than the FCP legacy 3-way, thanks to floating point implementation, but really in every other respect it is surely inferior. Above all the granularity of the interface is really unbelievably coarse, to the point that I can’t believe that anyone is taking it seriously as a grading tool, except for rough and ready client approvals. There is no way to make adjustments with any degree of finesse.

It’s one the of the areas that needs a lot of work, and that means a pretty basic rethink in my view rather than a update tweak. I think the Color Board has had a really easy ride in this whole discussion …

  • [Jeremy Garchow] “Foolcut will get you out to all of the initialisms with some rigamarole:

    https://foolcolor.net/foolcut

Intelligent Assistance is working on FCPX to FCP7 translation that will allow you to go straight to the interchange formats from 7.

Yes, FCPX can’t do it natively, but the capability is there. It will only improve with time.

I know, some people don’t have the time.”

OK, so I know it’s a bit late in the day to be asking this question but …

… why does it bug me so much that Apple can’t be bothered to develop these interchange formats themselves? Why should tiny third parties have to take up the slack (in ways that for now look like a pretty Heath-Robinson-couple-of-paperclips-and-an-elastic-band kind of deal, worthy as they are) when Apple could have so easily found the time, the money and the manpower to do it themselves?

It feels to me like an utterly contemptible dereliction of duty – though no doubt someone can come up with an honourable sounding excuse for it.

  • Here’s a full list of control options for V2 of this effect:

    Master controls:

Hue; Saturation; Brightness; Gamma; Contrast; Contrast Pivot; Contrast Color Clip Values; Shadows, Midtones and Highlights Color Balance (available as color wheel controls); Color Balance Clip Color Values; Tint Color, Tint intensity; Tint On/Off.

    Power Window controls:

Window shape selector (Rectangle/Circle); Window Invert; Window Feather; Window Position; Window Scale; Window Rotation; Brightness; Hue; Saturation; Gamme; Blur; Shadows, Midtones and Highlights Color Balance (available as color wheel controls).

    Highlights/Shadows controls:

Show Mask On/Off; Mask Strength; MAsk Shrink/Expand; Mask Soften; Mask Erode; Mask Blur; Shadows Brightness; Shadows Gamma; Shadows Saturation; Shadows and Midtones Shadows Color Balance (available as color wheel controls); Highlights Brightness; Highlights Gamma; Highlights Saturation; Highlights and Midtones Highlights Color Balance (available as color wheel controls).

    Diffuse controls:

Highlights Diffuse Mix Amount; Highlights Diffuse Spread; Shadows Diffuse Mix Amount; Shadows Diffuse Spread.

That’s it for now – note that currently the “Power Window” only allows for either inside or outside not both concurrently. I will look at adding this in any future update.

  • Here’s a new version of this grading effect with more controls still.

Now it also has a “power window” option (inside or outside only) with full control including blur.

    3023_tkypowergradev2.zip

Hopefully it all works properly now but this is quite a complex effect and there may well be issues with it so please let me know if you find any – I have fixed the anomaly whereby the diffuse options defaulted to On (some Motion 5/FCPX 10.0.1 quirk).

There is a lot in here – probably too much, so I would be very interested to hear feedback as to what could be simplified, so as to make room for more relevant options.

The only thing I haven’t been able to cater for is a chroma key option as there isn’t a simple chroma key in Motion 5 and there doesn’t seem to be a way of exploiting the blue green keyer in any useful way. Again if anyone knows a way around this please let me know.

[oliver michaels] ” have the diffuse bars set to 0 upon application so the correction is neutral until adjusted”

Yup, thanks for pointing this out – this is a “bug” that I missed when updating this effect for you from an older one, not sure how it crept in, sorry.

I’ll have it fixed in version 2 (later on today) which will have the power window option as well. I’ll also fix version 1 in case you want to carry on using that.

Thanks, Oliver – glad it could be of use to you. Do check out the shadow/highlight diffuse options which I forgot to mention in my previous post – they can really add a lot to the look.

    Good luck with the film!

[oliver michaels] “key-framed color correction filter”

You might like to take a look at my version of this which I posted today:

There are more refinements to come – if there is anything else you would like to see implemented do let me know.

I’m sure Alex 4D will come up with something amazing, but until then this might work for you …

[Dave Gage] “Can you clarify what you mean by “keyframes in FCPX are ease in/out only”?”

Ease in/out keyframes make the movement slow down as it leaves/approaches the keyframe – this bothers a lot of people (see the recent “crop and feather” thread here) as they would prefer the option to have a continuous smooth movement between the keyframes (linear), or better still have user-adjustable control of the “easing” (typically bezier). in an ideal world we would have all three options (plus “constant” which is a step movement between keyframes).

if it’s not bothering you then carry on, forget I spoke 😉

    [Jeremy Garchow] “Surely. Like what?”

I guess you’re being facetious here, but really what’s so special about the iPad??????

I hope it’s not the best technology available as it’s really only a product that lucked into wide usability because of the ingenuity of zillions of third parties – you gotta hand it to Apple they’ve got that part of the equation perfectly worked out.

I really hope there are lots of products that are just about to be released that make the whole touch screen revolution much more plausible – I can’t help feeling that next year or the year after we’ll look back on the iPad and think it was pretty lame overall. If not, then the world is less full of clever people than I always thought it was 😉

[Dave Gage] “It is looking like the Transform/Keyframe method is going to make more sense then using the Ken Burns effect which is more limited to the a start and end point.”

Get ready to be really frustrated – all keyframes in FCPX are ease in/out only, there are no linear keyframes, no bezier control. It can get annoying very quickly, I’m afraid to say.
