  • Free FCPX “Power Grade” Effect (Keyframable with 3-way controls) V1

Here’s a first version of a very powerful grading tool that gives you loads more control than you can get from the FCPX Color Board.

In addition to master controls which include 3-way controls (can be made to display color wheels if you click on the swatches and choose the color wheel), brightness, gamma, contrast (with pivot), tint, etc., there are also separate controls for both shadows and highlights, with very controls for the shadows/highlights mask.

Note that all parameters are keyframable, which again gives a useful advantage over the Color Board.

PS. Arriving soon a “power window” user-definable mask with onscreen controls.

Here’s a new version of this grading effect with more controls still.

Now it also has a “power window” option (inside or outside only) with full control including blur.

Hopefully it all works properly now but this is quite a complex effect and there may well be issues with it so please let me know if you find any – I have fixed the anomaly whereby the diffuse options defaulted to On (some Motion 5/FCPX 10.0.1 quirk).

There is a lot in here – probably too much, so I would be very interested to hear feedback as to what could be simplified, so as to make room for more relevant options.

The only thing I haven’t been able to cater for is a chroma key option as there isn’t a simple chroma key in Motion 5 and there doesn’t seem to be a way of exploiting the blue green keyer in any useful way. Again if anyone knows a way around this please let me know.

Here’s a full list of control options for V2 of this effect:

    Master controls:

Hue; Saturation; Brightness; Gamma; Contrast; Contrast Pivot; Contrast Color Clip Values; Shadows, Midtones and Highlights Color Balance (available as color wheel controls); Color Balance Clip Color Values; Tint Color, Tint intensity; Tint On/Off.

    Power Window controls:

Window shape selector (Rectangle/Circle); Window Invert; Window Feather; Window Position; Window Scale; Window Rotation; Brightness; Hue; Saturation; Gamme; Blur; Shadows, Midtones and Highlights Color Balance (available as color wheel controls).

    Highlights/Shadows controls:

Show Mask On/Off; Mask Strength; MAsk Shrink/Expand; Mask Soften; Mask Erode; Mask Blur; Shadows Brightness; Shadows Gamma; Shadows Saturation; Shadows and Midtones Shadows Color Balance (available as color wheel controls); Highlights Brightness; Highlights Gamma; Highlights Saturation; Highlights and Midtones Highlights Color Balance (available as color wheel controls).

    Diffuse controls:

Highlights Diffuse Mix Amount; Highlights Diffuse Spread; Shadows Diffuse Mix Amount; Shadows Diffuse Spread.

That’s it for now – note that currently the “Power Window” only allows for either inside or outside not both concurrently. I will look at adding this in any future update.
