I am not aware of anything that would tell you that, you could check in your log files like in your apple file share log, but I don’t think OS X would log that.

Have you checked your monitor connections to the computer?

Your driving 2 23″ cinema display with and X1900 card, you may be pushing what the card is able to reliably do, try unplugging one of the monitors and see if the problem persists.

  • A couple things, have you restarted recently?

    Have you run disc utility?

Have you checked your monitor connection to the computer?

In terms of the sluggish performance, I would try emptying your caches and restarting your computer, and run the cron scripts as well.

The other big thing is get more ram, if you have an 8 core computer with only 2GB of ram you are starving your processors for RAM. The rule of thumb I follow is if I am doing graphics, video, or other memory and processor intensive tasks I have at least 2GB of ram per core. If I am not doing those type of tasks I would go with 1GB per core so minimum your computer in my view should have 8GBs of ram… as to whether that will fix the sluggishness, it will make your computer perform better, but report back with the results of the above mentioned ideas.

Sure give it a try, it may work… I would certainly wait till you don’t need the computer for anything pressing in case it takes more time to get back online…

Have you tried inserting the panther disc and going to system prefs and selecting the install disc manually as the startup disc?

Also are you using a USB keyboard on the computer, if so are you holding C on the USB keyboard or the laptop keyboard? If USB keyboard try holding C on the laptop keyboard and see….

Though if the machine is working fine at the moment I probably would let it go, since you can boot of the tiger disc and I would imagine if the system ever gets hosed you’d upgrade to tiger anyways…

April 10, 2008 at 8:52 pm in reply to: Safari not accepting https:

Run disk utility delete your cache for safari, and safari preferences

If that doesn’t work, what type of re-install did you do?

Can you access the web through another browser? (firefox…)

    If yes then

Download the safari installer if none of the above works or use you system disk to just install safari, after deleting your current copy. You need to uninstall safari if possible getting rid of all traces of the application before installing the new one…

If no then you need to do an archive and install of your system….

Sounds like a bad enclosure… first run disk utility if possible then if you have access to another enclosure try that.

Also you may try a different connection method if you can….

Depends on your network, for example are you using a mac only network?

    Are you using Remote Desktop?

What function does your computer serve on the network?

the answer is however most likely to be no, but depending on the answers to the above questions you may be able to make some progress.

A little more information is an order here

What system did the computer come with? Is the original system panther or tiger?

Is the panther boot disk a real apple disk or did you burn it?

Did the panther disc come with a different computer?
