If you want the adjustment layer to affect just the one layer below it, select both layers and precompose them (layers menu). Or you can just cut and paste the effects from the adjustment layer directly to the single layer to be affected. This won’t work if they are different sizes and use a mask, though (e.g. with text), so I would just advise precomposing.

Hi Laurie,
If they move around a lot, their face will probably move about too, meaning that using the eyes as track points is out. But perhaps you could track the top of their head, or some item of clothing. The track doesn’t have to be fantastic because the obscuration layer won’t have to track seamlessly.

Hi Sam,
Sounds like the wiggle is affecting all the layers that make up the bus separately. The wiggle adds random values, and there’s no reason to expect the random value applied to one of the layers will be the same as any of the others.
What you need to do is add the wiggle to a null object and then parent all the bus layers to this one null. If you want to wiggle the bus in z-space too, you’ll have to make the null 3D. You can also specify whether you want the bus to wiggle more in one direction than in the others – see my tutorial on youtube, link below.

Maybe this is a semi-transparent area? I’m not sure if this would work, but maybe you need to render straight and alpha channel separately.

Try precomposing the adjustment payer along with the particles layer. If you need the lights/camera layers for both the particles and the footage, you can duplicate them and place one copy in the precomp with the particles.

Sorry to answer your question with an indirect answer, but could you not just use a single stroke effect and set it to work on ALL masks? That way you won’t need an instance of the stroke effect for every path. You could then re-order the masks on the layer so that they are stroked in the correct order.

I’m not sure if there is – at least, I’ve never come across a method myself – but a quick way to do it would be to add a keyframe and then move forward the requisite number of frames using the shift+pg dn keys. One hit will take you 10 frames. Then add another keyframe. At some point you might want to copy all your existing keyframes and repaste them further on down the timeline to speed things up. If you have a slow-rendering composition, turn caps lock on while you work to stop preview rendering (well, unless you need to see what’s going on in the comp while you’re adding keyframes).

I might need some more info before I can guess at what’s causing the problem.
When you say ‘animate the ellipse’, what exactly is it that you are animating? That is, the ellipse is presumably made up of a mask on a white solid layer, but are you animating the mask shape, the solid position or the properties of some effect you have added to the solid?
At what point did the ellipse vanish? As soon as you animated whichever property you animated, or when you added an effect, or at some unknown time? Can you ‘undo’ what you did and the ellipse comes back, or are you unable to retrace your steps?
The first possibility could be that you have turned off the eyeball switch for the layer, but it could be many other things too.
