  • [Larry Rosner] “Is FCX same as FCPX, or does it refer to FCExpress? “

It’s my shorthand for FCP-X. FCExpress was discontinued before FCP7, and I didn’t recommend that to people when it was current. Habit of mine to leave out the “P”…bad habit.

[Larry Rosner] ” I was hoping to avoid having to learn new software.”

In terms of learning curve, going to Premiere Pro would be the shallowest learning curve…very easy to pick up.

[Larry Rosner] “I’m not familiar with them, but thought they don’t have means for expansion or changing cards if needed in the future”

That’s the issue with them, but then again, you don’t have that option with the current MacPros either…no card slots. There are Thunderbolt RAIDS and Thunderbolt capture cards and thunderbolt external chassis for cards now…

[Larry Rosner] “or will the a newer model of the old style MacPro tower give me the specs I need o run current OS and software?”

I wouldn’t recommend that. The MacPro came out 5 years ago…2013…and has really NOT been updated at all. So you’ll be paying current day prices for a 5 year old machine. iMacs are more current…or current macBook Pros.

Well, I don’t ever do dips to black in Avid because it has a few other issues…and we have a mandate at work not to do them as they have issues of not going to FULL black. We do this to ensure that online goes smoothly. So one thing I have to tell my clients when I online, is to not use dips to black…if you want to fade out and back up, have one frame of black (nothing) between the clips and then dissolve down and up.

But yes, I too have had this issue and needed to manually adjust all of them. If there is a solution to this, I’d love to know

Don’t be so fast to update…give AJA time to make new drivers.

    SLOW DOWN!

    ☺

Man, Avid used to take 1+ years between updates, now it’s like MONTHLY…

  • If you want to edit current video formats, then you’ll need more current software than something 8-10 years old. You might be able to get away with editing that video on FCP 6 or 7…but you’ll need to convert that video first to ProRes. To do that…to connect the phone to the computer and offload it and convert it to ProRes…you’ll need a newer OS, and newer apps to do this. And that might require newer hardware.

To edit those videos without converting them, you’ll definitely need newer software and hardware…Premire Pro or FCX (although with Cel Phone video, you’ll still need to “optimize” in FCX…and unless you have high end hardware to decode the video on the fly in Premiere…it’s best to convert it to an editing codec.)

But I do think that you should update your hardware and software to something more current to stay with current workflows and camera formats. You’ll be struggling to get work done with what you currently have. A more current iMac (2015 or so) and either FCX (one time purchase of $300….all updates free) or Premiere…which you rent for $80 a month (with ALL the other apps) or DaVinci Resolve (free for video up to HD, $300 for the ability to work with 4K or higher…but all updates free). WHICH one you choose is up to you…they all have trial periods, or are free…so you can see what you like best.

  • Want to ensure the longevity of your camera masters? ARCHIVE EVERYTHING! BACK UP THE ENTIRE card…not parts of it. Don’t be selective, don’t leave things out. Those files are so small, you aren’t saving space, and they contain information linked to the MXF files…metadata…date, time shot…camera recorded on, lots of information. And while you don’t THINK your NLE uses that when importing, it might, it might not. But another NLE might require it, and without those files, cannot import properly.

Always archive the ENTIRE Card…and maintain the full card structure.

You can’t have two versions of Avid on the same boot drive. If you want to use the latest, then it’s recommended to install a second hard drive, or partition your current one, install a separate OS on it, and then the new version.

Besides, the OS you’d be required to run for MC 2018.x won’t be compatible with MC 6.5, and the one you need for 6.5 won’t run the latest MC.

  • [Melissa Warren] ” However it involves re-creating all of the sequence media when actually I have the original media and don’t want to create new media. “

Sorry, but that’s what you’ll need to do if you want to do this. You can TRY to AMA link the footage in Avid and then link that to the sequence you bring from Resolve, but I haven’t heard many people have success with that.

[Melissa Warren] “However I cannot get Avid to relink to the original media. Does anyone know if this is possible? “

I’m not sure what happens to the metadata, but when I tried this myself, I got maybe 1/4 of the clips to relink…and with maximum effort. But when I transcoded, it was fine. Avid really prefers transcoded media anyway, so doing that would be fine.

May 18, 2018 at 7:50 pm in reply to: workflow 4k to be exported in 1080

Cut in a 1080 project. Bring the footage in as DNxHR HQ at 4K. OR…if you need to work Proxy, there’s a codec for that, AMA link the footage and then transcode to DNxHR LB….and then relink to the masters and transcode to HQ when done. This way you keep the 4K size but work in 1080, so can use Frame Flex to reframe shots as needed.

If you need to pass footage to AE, then working HQ would be an option…but this all depends on if your machine can handle it. If not, then you’ll have to send the camera master to AE…matching the timecode to find the right spot.

Well, the company I am at, we cut ANCIENT ALIENS…and run almost the most current Avid MC (2018.3). Long form, HEAVY Sapphire use (we are VFX heavy, and do a lot internally with Sapphire). We are almost all on 2012 Cheese Grater MacPros. But we also cut offline…and yeah, things are SLOW…mainly due to the ISIS and NEXUS.

If you want to use Apple products, get a top of the line iMac…or even a lower end iMac Pro…both will be good. if you want a PC, look at the HP z6.
