AAF from AVID: Problems with Fades
Hi Everybody,
I have this issue, every time I get an AAF from AVID:
Every Fade to black becomes a Fade to White in DaVinci.
Of course I can change the “Dip to” Colour easily, but in a film with many transition it’s becoming cumbersome
work, like licking and closing envelopes.Second thing: The timing!
AVID has a very nice equal fade to black, where the dade is spread nice and evenly over the time
of the transition.
In DaVinci it’s becoming so much harsher. It goes down very quick and the screen is already black half way through the transition.I fiddle then with Transition curves and keyframes so long, till I match the Offline reference, but it’s really eating time
for no reason.Any ideas about this two issues?

Well, I don’t ever do dips to black in Avid because it has a few other issues…and we have a mandate at work not to do them as they have issues of not going to FULL black. We do this to ensure that online goes smoothly. So one thing I have to tell my clients when I online, is to not use dips to black…if you want to fade out and back up, have one frame of black (nothing) between the clips and then dissolve down and up.
But yes, I too have had this issue and needed to manually adjust all of them. If there is a solution to this, I’d love to know

Yes, it’s what I thought.
For now, when getting those kind of AAf’s I just change
everything manually: If was in AVID a Fade to Black (not Dip to Black!)
Dissolve, it comes into DaVinci with a complete different Fade behaviour and Fades to White.
All I do then is change it to Cross Dissolve and it solves it.
I realized yesterday it works much faster, than changing first the colour to Black and then Fiddling with the transition curve.Best,
