BUT…the IO was different. Like teh Avid Adrenaline, which also connected via Firewire, it was able to pass an Uncompressed signal thru there. Again…remember…this is SD, not HD

Normally, yes. But the AJA IO, like the Avid Adrenaline, connected via Firewire, but could capture uncompressed.

So unlike DV via firewire, which was in essence a data transfer (1:1, zero loss)…capturing analog DOES compress it. Now, when the AJA IO came out, ProRes wasn’t a thing…you’d capture to Uncompressed 8-bit. And the encoding is handled by the computer. I WOULD hazard a guess that your computer can’t compress to PRoRes very well, as the computer is doing the encoding. BUT…you said it does DV to ProRes just fine. So that to me is odd.
I suggest trying to capture to 8-bit uncompressed and see what that looks like. 10-bit is overkill for SD footage. If you can get FCP to recognize that J-30…. RS-422 deck control the issue? Not having CONTROL? or is it also not getting video? Make sure to start the computer with the IO connected.

[Brian DiLorenzo] ” Offline it all, let the XML sequence load into Premiere, then just remove all that audio off the timeline, and try the reconnect again?”
Don’t “Offline” anything first. Bring in the XML…if it’s offline, then strip the audio from it…then go to reconnect the video. Once that’s up, then go to the older sequence, copy and paste the audio tracks from that. Your colorist didn’t do anything to the audio…so ignore what they send back in that regard.

Import the XML as a new sequence…import it and create the new sequence linked to the color renders. NOW…go to the old sequence and COPY just the audio…go to the new sequence, and paste that audio here. So now you’ll have the colored sequence and your temp audio.

99% of the time I can’t get the stills to even link properly. If there is keyframing done, yes. But if a plugin is used for this, then no. What I tend to have clients provide, due the the lack of linking…is a full res QT export of their project. If they have a lot of dissolves, then I sometimes ask for a STILLS ONLY export of their project. Or I use their reference QT to rebuild their moves.

You are working with 4K footage, in a complex codec (as you mentioned)…on a severely underpowered machine. You need faster processors, more RAM (32GB)…a GPU that has at least 4GB of RAM (yours has 1GB). USB3 won’t cut it…you need at least Thunderbolt 2 and two or more RAID 0…or four-six RAID 5.
Basically, to cut that footage native, you need a new computer…and you need to shell out money for it. Upgrading the one you have will be throwing good money after bad…it MIGHT get you where you need to be, maybe….but you are spending money on a very VERY old computer. If you want to use that computer, then you need to transcode. Don’t want to transcode, then you need a new computer with high end GPU with 4-12GB of RAM, 32GB of system RAM, an i7 or better processor…and Thunderbolt RAID at least. Talking the new iMac Pro if you are going to stick with a Mac…or HP or build your own PC. Editing native 4K XAVC is possible, but requires a LOT of system resources..a fast computer.

You need to make a “sync map” that builds the angles on a timeline, and then you make groups from that.

May 30, 2018 at 4:41 pm in reply to: Do I need to update software/hardware for downloading/editing smartphone videos?[Larry Rosner] “Does FCPX enable chaptering, authoring, or do I copmpress than take that to my desktop to output?”
Sorry, FCX isn’t in my wheelhouse, so I don’t know.
[Larry Rosner] ” after converting to ProRes and doing editing, output to HD and put on thumb drive or external HD for client, or maybe youtube, vimeo, etc?”
Up to the client. What do they want, where do they want it? Not a question for me, but for them.
[Larry Rosner] “Do people burn to DVD anymore,”
I do, but I also deal with clients with antiquated needs.
[Larry Rosner] ” and what about HD issue? Would than need to burn Blue Ray, and that involves getting external Blue Ray burner, if possible?”
Yup, if they want an HD disk, it’ll have to be BluRay. And Compressor will make a file for that, or FCX, or other software. But you can’t have menu’s and chapters like you did with DVD Studio Pro. Apple doesn’t make software for that. Toast…not sure if they do. Most apps now just make a video that plays, but you should still be able to add chapter marks.
