I use both. They are tools. They have their strengths and weaknesses. The project and workflow are the determining factor for me. Big advantage Avid has…very robust media management. Perfect for offline/online workflows. FCPs Media Manager is very problematic.
However, the integration with Apple’s other effects and mixing tools make FCP a joy to work with, and I find manipulating the timeline to be much easier and faster. But, again, depends on the job.
You’ll find more ex-Avid users using FCP than ex-FCP users using Avid. More Avid people out there than FCP people…FCP is new.

Try this:
#18 Edit to Tape “Incompatible Compression Settings”
Shane’s Stock Answer #18
To Edit to Tape you either need to have your sequence loaded in the VIEWER, or simply drag it from the BROWSER onto the Edit to Tape window and choose Assemble Edit or Insert Edit.
For both methods, the tape needs to be black and coded and have TC already on it. And you need to mark and IN point in the ETT window.

If it dropped frames duing capture then yes, those frames are missing and it will play back all jumpy. journalling off is good for media drives.
But why did it drop frames to begin with? You say you captured to this drive initially? And it was formatted Mac OS extended at the time?
hmmmm…

AH…you captured your footage to your internal system drive? Then yes, that is why you dropped frames. NEVER capture to your system drive…it is busy managing the OS and Applications, it gets easily distracted if you try to capture media to it.
ALWAYS capture media to secondary internal drives, or external drives.
If you captured with dropped frames, then the only way to solve it is to trash your media, and RECAPTURE to an external drive. DON’T DELETE YOUR CLIPS! They contain the VALUABLE timecode information, so that you don’t have to log all your footage again. Just delete the captured media, and go buy an external Firewire drive.
Capture to that. -

Unfortunately we can’t train you as to which one to use, or how to adjust it here. We can’t hear the audio. This is something you will have to figure out.

Search the forum. We go over this about once a month.
I am an Avid user and FCP user. They are both good. They both have their good points and bad points.
They are both just tools. The type of job determines the tool I’ll use.
But really, search the forum.

The perfect HD system will run you over $30,000….WITHOUT the decks, and depending on the monitor. A good HD monitor will run you between $17,000 and $50,000. But, that is for uncompressed HD.
What kind of HD are you talking about here?

YOu don’t want HFS+. Not if you intend to use it as a Media Drive. You need Mac OS Extended.

The Saint eh?
The Final Cut Pro application goes on the system drive, in the applications folder. The Final Cut Pro project file whould also live on the internal system drive.
All your captured media, audio and pictures should be on the external or SECONDARY internal drive. No media should be stored on the internal system drive.

Load the image in the Viewer, go to the Motion tab, play with the DISTORT function.
