As long as you capture them the same way, you should be OK. You will see a difference, but I have seen HDCAM and HDV mixed together with decent results.
All after Color Correction, of course.

It isn’t a problem, it is how the software is designed. Of course it will increase and decrease the size of the clip if you adjust it on the timeline. You are telling FCP “take this in and out, which was 3 seconds, and slow it to 50%, thus making it 6 seconds. Or, take this 3 second clip, speed it up 200% and make it 1sec 15 frames.” You are saying use these ins and outs but adjust the speed.
Best solution is option 1, load the clip into the viewer, mark IN and OUT, hit APPLE-J aned adjust the speed, drop into the timeline.

How are you exporting? Quicktime Movie or Quicktime Conversion?
What is the format of the drive you are exporting to? It might have a file size limit…Mac OS extended is the recommended format, and has no limit, but FAT 32 has a 2GB limit.

Mark Roudonis, who replied earlier, uses X-SAN to manage 100 FCP systems…with X_Serve Raids managing over…what, 14TB of storage? I forget. Mark was kind enough to give me a tour. All 100 FCP stations have access to the footage.

The Animation codec is the best, unless you have the Avid codecs (available for download from their site) in which case you can export as an Avdi codec.
But what this sounds like is the QT movies are a smaller size than the Avid project. Like 320×240, not full size 720×486.
What is the resolution of the QT files? Of the Avid project (SD or HD)?

I have two Dell 2405 monitors, and love them. I am also editing DVCPRO HD. You can use the monitors for the additional real estate, or using Digital Cinema Desktop you can use one as a production monitor….this via the DVI connection. You can even use this setup for preliminary color correction, as I recently found out (www.lfhd.net). But for FINAL color correction and prepping for broadcast delivery, best to have a professional HD monitor. Do the preliminary CC with the Dell, then do the final touches with the HD monitor and external waveform/vectorscopes (ecinemasystems has a good one, Sony has a $45,000 CRT, but there are lower end HD monitors, like the PVM-14L5).
The Dell monitors beat the Apple monitors soundly, btw…wwwlbarefeats.com/lcd.
