I knew. The person who plugged it in did not know. That person’s job is to be an editor, not to keep track of AC adapters. Regardless I never thought it could fry the thing. I trusted LaCie to have the kind of foresight needed to prevent their customers from making potential grave mistakes. Such as using different connectors for plugs that will break other products of theirs. Something like this could happen to anyone with LaCie products. Yourself included. You could easily have an intern or someone make this mistake, labeled or not. I’m sure you’d yell and scream and fire the person while proclaiming your love for LaCie. But I don’t work that way. Yes, it is user error. My error. But the error was not because I didn’t go get a label maker a Staples. It’s because I purchased LaCie products.

If you’re gonna spend the money to buy a new Mac, I would strongly consider getting an Intel Mac Pro and replacing your Decklink card with a PCIe model. Buying an older PowerPC Mac with legacy PCI-X slots is not a good long term investment just to hold onto one card. PCIe slots will be the norm for many years, and the Intel processors are much more powerful. Just my 2 cents.

I think you’re wrong about that. 50′ wont’ work. Good (not crappy) 50′ 75Ohm RG59 doesn’t work here. BMD emailed me and said SPDIF does normally cap out at 10 meters (32′) and they provided a link to an extender device. I think the SPDIF interface and cable drivers just work differently than SDI, so you can’t apply the same facts and figures to each as far as cable length is concerned.

I don’t have one. But I do know it takes a good amount of time for a RAID5 to rebuild when the volume is that large. Video might be choppy because the thing is busy rebuilding.

I’ve tried lots of different video cables. The same cables have no trouble with SDI video.
I also used an impedence converter which allows you to turn the SPDIF it into balanced AES. Yet I still experienced signal breakup with a 50ft. XLR cable.
People tout the importance of high quality cables. While I don’t disagree with that, getting high quality cable like RG-6 is not the solution I’d like to go with. I believe that if your signal path is breaking up on low-quality cable, yet it seems to work fine on high-quality cable – to me using the good cable is still dangerous and too unreliable to be trusted. The signal path needs to be reliable enough so that it could still work on lower quality cable. Wear and tear, hot or cold weather, etc. These things mean that if the signal just barely makes it to begin with on good cables, then you could have problems later on when the environment changes for the worse.
Luckily though, I may have found a good solution. Can someone tell me if this box will re-clock the signal, thus giving me lip sync delay? Thanks.

A new revision of SDI is currently being developed by IC manufaturers. Just like HD-SDI upped the capability HD and dual-channel HD-SDI upped it to 4:4:4 1080p, the new form of SDI will allow 4k and beyond. I forget what it’s called. I’ll post a link to an article if I see it again.

There are Easy Setups for it, so yes, it should work so long as your Mac is powerful enough and you set the Decklink HD Pro to do an upconversion in the system preferences.

You don’t capture XDCAM like you would a tape. You import the files similar to the P2 workflow.
Don’t capture over HD-SDI and recompress to XDCAM. That defeats the purpose.

I used a program called Pacifist to find and trash every single file that FCS installs. Then I reinstalled it and tried the update again. Works great now.
I have no idea what the cause of the problems were.

Library/Application Support/ProApps/Final Cut Studio System ID
But don’t take my word for it. I could be wrong.
