  • FCP will not open after 5.1.2 update

Posted by Don Hertz on September 27, 2006 at 2:38 pm

I get the error message “Final Cut Pro quit unexpectedly” when attempting to open the application after the 5.1.2 update. Any thoughts on what I should try to fix this? Here is what I’ve done so far and my system config:

    1. Trashed all preferences (and again between each step)
    2. Removed all third party plug-ins (one at a time)
    3. Removed custom settings (in groups)
    4. Removed Kona 2 related software

    My system config:

    G5 Dual 2.7Ghz, 8Gb RAM
    OS 10.4.7
    Quicktime 7.1.3
    nVideo GeForce 6800 GT 256mb
    Kona 2
    Fiber Channel Card
    Xserve RAID

    Thanks.

Do you have any Avid Quicktime codecs installed? Check into Quicktime components and codecs and remove anything Avid. This fix was posted last night on the Apple forums.

actually, the same thing just happened here on my G5 Dual 2.0 machine. the G5 Quad is fine after the update, but I can’t get my Dual 2.0 to launch FCP right now either. I just tried repairing Disk Permissions but that didn’t do it yet.

Just ran Disk Warrior on the system and that didn’t fix it. I noticed that it quits at the same exact point each time, when the Matte Choker plug-in is being loaded.

Just spent my entire morning troubeshooting this… turned out the culprit was two old AVID codecs I had installed. After removing them, FCP 5.1.2 launched fine.

Glad that worked for you. No Avid codecs installed here though.

Your solution gave me the idea to remove the Flip for Mac WMV codecs though, but that didn’t work either.

    Still scratching the ol’ noggin.

    Walter,

Try removing these if you have them…I found this on another forum.

“Ok guys here is the offending Quicktime CODECs that cause FCP 5.1.2 to crash on app start up:

    on2vp3.component
    XviD_Codec v0.5.1.component
    ZyGoVideo.component “

Just got it and it had nothing to do with Quicktime.

Apple told me to remove an old Zaxwerks Plug-In I had tested last year in Motion, I didn’t even remember it being there. FCP can now read the FX-Plugins folder and that was the culprit. I removed Zakwerks and now FCP is humming along on the G5.

I did not have a problem on my intel machine with the install or the Flip4 mac codecs, also the machine is now crashing less that it was before.

This is the old G5 Dual 2.0. Our G5 Quad is running just fine. Supposedly the Mac Pro will finally get here today. They’ve delivered the wrong one two days in a row.
