Yes Bob, I have done this. I’m not an IT person so it was a LOT of research and work learning about it. The guys at Small Tree Communications are a great resource for this kind of thing.
Combining NICs is known by several names- bonding, pairing, etc. There are a lot of different methods to do this and they all have unique aspects. Adaptive Load Balancing is one. Static Link Aggregation is another.
Mac OS X natively only supports one of these methods. It’s called 802.3ad Dynamic Link Aggregation (or LACP). To set it up in OS X, it’s very simple. Go to Network settings in system prefs and select “Show: Network Port Configurations”. Then click “New” and you have the ability to select the NICs you want to join together and select “Link Aggregation”.
Aside from the NAS, you need to have a managed network switch that specifically supports 802.3ad Dynamic Link Aggregation (LACP). They’re not the cheap ones. The cheapest I found was Dell’s PowerConnect series. And it’s not easy to set it up. And Dell tech support from India aren’t going to be any help with this kind of thing.
Also keep in mind that you won’t get a single 2Gbps link. You get two 1Gbps links if that makes sense. So if you copy one file it’s 1Gbps. If you copy two files (or playback two streams), you get 2Gbps. Hope that makes sense.
I use it for our SAN. I’m running sort of a homemade iSCSI server and for the clients I’m using MetaSAN and ATTO’s XtendSAN for the iSCSI initiator.
Anyway, it’s a lot of work. I’d wait for 10gb if possible.

I actually just looked into it. Are you sure this is a proprietery codec? It looks as if it’s just a regular DV codec but it uses hardware to do the work. One way to check is if it will playback on PC that doesn not have the Edius hardware.
If it is DV, you’re still in the same boat because Quicktime won’t read AVI DV files either. But you can use Focus’ DV Conversion Suite to make it a Quicktime without any recompression.

You aren’t going to find any Quicktime components for Edius since this is a Directshow codec designed for Windows. Mac OS will never read it. Quicktime can read common generic AVI codecs like Cinepack and “None”, but for unique codecs (and there are hundreds of them) you need to use a PC to convert it to Quicktime.
There are numerous tools for Windows that can do this. For some strange reason Quicktime Pro for Windows is not one of them. But there are plenty of others. Do a Google search for “AVI to MOV” and that should get you on the right track. Try to find a free one if you can.

I had this issue. They changed something so that it’s now in a folder called “Boris”. You might have to install it again from the FCP install disk.

Wow, you’re right. It does say that. Only mine says Little Endian. This is crazy. What the hell is going on? Blackmagic does not have a DV codec or any other codec other than it’s legacy Uncompressed codecs. Something’s not right here.
Quicktime 7.1.3. Opening up a regular Quicktime DV file and hitting Command-I, it says it’s Blackmagic DV, 720×480 (640×480) Millions, 16-bit Integer (Little Endian).
That “640×480” is especially troubling. Just as a test, I tried exporting “Movie to DV Stream” which is supposed to be lossless in this scenario. But it actually cropped the left and right edges of the video – looks like it turned it into 640×480 square pixels. Something screwed up here.

I know there are numerous tools that can demux transport streams and remux them into program streams (and vice-versa) without any re-compression. Whether or not you can convert HDV to Blu-ray-friendly MPEG-2, unfortunately I don’t know enough about it.

Thanks. I’m glad someone else understands how I’m the one who got screwed here regardless of anything else. Yes, I did anticipate that certain people would tell me I should organize my AC adapters the way Daniel Stern organized his record collection in the movie Diner.
I didn’t want this to be a LaCie bashing thread. There are plenty of those. I really just wanted to warn others and make a short gripe. All the backlash is what angered me and sent me on a tirade. Honestly, less negative things would have been said about LaCie in this thread if people were treated with more respect instead of being talked down to and patronized. Just an observation I had.
FW drives are stupid anyways. Hard drives in general should never be used as a backup device. Which is why everything I lost exists on tapes somewhere. I just have to call ceratin people and make an a-hole out of myself by asking for them.

Thanks for looking into it. You may very well be right. I did some digging through our dozens of AC adapters and found non-LaCie ones with the same connector. They’re from some generic SATA enclosure bought from Frys or Newegg or something. The editor who fried it says he doesn’t think he tried those ones. But based on what you say, I’ll go out on a limb and assume he did.
Creative Cow should consider letting users edit and/or delete their posts. If they did, I’d happily edit my posts to reflect this new information.
All that said, I still think it’s a lousy design. Just the fact that this did happen to me proves it. Yes, the electical info is printed on the adapter, but I was talking about it being prited on the drive itself so you could easilly avoid using the wrong adapter by examining the voltage and amps. Most products do this from my experience.
And LaCie shouldn’t use generic connectors that don’t abide by a universal pinout standard. Unique connectors that lock in like a key would have prevented this. Or perhapes fuses or some sort of power regulation. Or an internal PSU. I’m not an electrical engineer, but those are three things right there that would have prevented this from happening. I know not everyone else does this, but I hold LaCie to higher standards. The reason I hold your company to higher standards is because the products are marketed to creative non-tech type Mac professionals who IMO are more likely to make this kind of mistake. I also hold LaCie to higher standards because they generally have a price premium over similar products from other brands.
So sorry about the bad info given to the user community here. I only said what I knew at the time and I’d edit it if I could. But I still think the design for these drives is flawed for what many people believe is a premium product.

I have about 50 or 60 cables in the back of my rack unit, I have no idea what is what without labels. Even just standard power cords, all of them have a label on it so I don’t accidentally pull the wrong cable.”
Whatever your reasons for being an apologist, I’ll leave you to them. Nothing like this has ever happened to anyone in my studio with any other product. I don’t just mean disk drives. I mean anything. Radios, portable CD players, you name it. If it’s the wrong plug, 99 out of 100 times it won’t fit. And even if it does fit it won’t break the thing. There are supposed to be electronics in the drive that will prevent this kind of thing. There are these things called fuses. It shouldn’t have happened. End of story.
