  • Capture DigiBeta footage as HDV?

Posted by Cameron Clendaniel on September 29, 2006 at 8:43 pm

This question may seem strange, but is it possible (we use the Decklink HD Pro) to digitize digibeta footage using the HDV codec into Final Cut Pro on the fly? Or must the digibeta footage first be capture using its native codec, and then converted to HDV footage within FCP? Or, in other words, what is the fastest way to convert footage on digibeta tapes to HDV footage that can be dumped in an HDV timeline with no render needed?

There are Easy Setups for it, so yes, it should work so long as your Mac is powerful enough and you set the Decklink HD Pro to do an upconversion in the system preferences.

In case anyone’s interested, here’s the response I got from BMD:

“No, not that I know of. DigiBeta is NTSC resolution (720×486). The HDV compressor is designed to only be able to compress properly two different resolutions – both of them HD – 1920×1080 and 1280×720. The DV codec was designed to compress NTSC…

It sounds like what your are trying to do is up-res. You either need a piece of hardware, or you need to capture your NTSC clip, create an HDV timeline, drop the NTSC clip on it, select it to resize the clip, and re-render the whole thing.”
