I said this in a previous thread but curious to get some more thoughts.
Having followed the rumor sites and read this thread I cant help but be excited!
However, having recently invested A LOT of money in a new system I cant help but wonder how LightPeak will effect me. In November I purchased a 12-core and added 32GB of RAM / Internal 8TB RAID 0 (OWC) and now while I am excited for the future I am also a little concerned.
With BMD video card, GTX285, Dreamcolor / HDlink, etc I invested roughly 10k into a home setup for learning & home based work but now it seems I might be behind the times in 6 months or less. How long should I hold onto this kit before its time to re-up on a MacPro or any of those other items?! Its not like I have jobs rolling in right now immediately paying for the investment unfortunately. Learning and side work at home was the expectation.
How soon before I should make a move and try to Craiglist / ebay the beast I built for a new Light Peak MacPro?!
Advice anyone?
thanks

yeah I was thinking I could just in theory add that suffix and have the files in a folder that makes it clear that they are in fact HQ. I guess i will give that a try but the question still remains for me as to how I can avoid copying over all 100GB of this project and instead only create HQ files for that final locked sequence. any ideas?
thank you

thank you for the response.
to answer your question – it looks like the editor transcoded the LT files with the original file name at the front of the file but then adds at the end of the naming convention for each clip “-apple ProRes LT”. So does that mean a nightmare for me – i know he added reel names in the fcp browser but so what right if the file names themselves are different then it could be a problem?
Ultimately if this will be too much of a nightmare to go to regular ProRes I will stick with using the LT files but I guess I want to also avoid copying over 100GB of material for just one locked 4 minute sequence.
any help would be great

Jeremy you rock i must say i appreciate your truth…you drop the knowledge.
you bring the truth, i really wish I had asked for the producer to have the editor media manage and prep for color BEFORE getting me involved.
In terms of copying the entire project over i am curious about best practices on my end – i have the space on my internal RAID no doubt about that (8TB w/ 5 still avail )and its fine for me to do while working on it. Would you agree that i can always just media manage the final sequence & color stuff for my own archive on my end so as not to keep any of the extra media?
I believe what you are saying and do not want to run that test because I believe you about quality. I do have the original footage broken into card folders and the editor has told me that he added reel #’s in the FCP browser and re-sent me an updated fcp sequence. I just have to know even if I dont do it – in theory if I WERE to try to reconform to (HQ) after copying over the entire 100GB project, what would be the best way to do this given I only have Reel #’s and no time code?
I really appreciate your time and feedback sir.
best

thanks for the reply
just a couple questions.
If I wanted to copy over the necessary media from the locked edit and not the entire 100GB how best would you recommend going about this – media manager copy (w/ handles) off of lacie drive onto my RAID or something else?
I honestly would like to start with HQ instead of (LT) its pretty darking footage and there already seems to be some information loss so I want to at least TRY to start with better footage before grading in color.
any thoughts on best way to get this project off my drive with best quality and only necessary media?
cheers

Hello friends,
I just did a search for this topic and came across this thread as being the most recent. I have a very similar problem on a music video I was just passed for grading. I have some technical questions about workflow for setting this up correcting before grading in Color (shot on 5D).
I was given the project on small lacie drive with all of the RAW footage shot as well as the ProRes(LT) footage it was edited with (100GB total). I have yet to copy it over to my internal RAID since its only a 4 minute song and obviously only uses a fraction of that footage – i want to copy over only what I need and in the proper format for grading. Since its 5D I would like to make sure I have the best to work with (HQ versions) of a 4 minute media managed edit i assume (w/ a little handles of course).
I am thinking because it was 5D transcoded to ProRes(LT) it would make more sense for me to open the project off the drive and media manage only the final locked fcp sequence and make sure its at ProRes HQ from the RAW card folders. I have not gotten in touch with the editor yet but already just looking at the project I see that there is no timecode nor any Reel #’s, also i see a few multi clips in the timeline mixed in so i am beginning to get a little worried about this whole project. I assume maybe the editor did not know about the plugin for FCP and that he just used MPEGstreamclip or compressor to transcoder to ProRes(LT). How would you guys recommend uprezzing and media managing the locked edit for correct prepping before sending to Color?
Any help for workflow would be much appreciated.
