  • I run AECS3 on my 2.16ghz C2D iMac (previous generation) with the 7600GT graphics card, and it runs quite well. The new aluminum iMacs can be upgraded to 4gb of RAM for under $80, which is well worth the money for AE use.

VisualHub can convert to WMV, and it’s $23.32.

The only issue I’ve had is that my AECS3 locks up and crashes if I try to switch to another space. To avoid this, I have to turn off Spaces while using AE, which is annoying, but it seems to alleviate the problem.

However, you cannot open a project created in CS3 in an earlier version of AE. Magic Bullet won’t install into CS3 (yet), so if you want to use Magic Bullet plugins, you have to use AE7 or earlier.

I’m just trying to export one clip, not the whole sequence. I have only that clip selected and audio turned off when I try the “same as source” export.

Sorry, I’ll post the Avid questions in the Avid forum.

That is all great info. My boss doesn’t think in terms of AE at all, since he prefers to do his effects on our Nitris machine.

I’m rendering the clip at 720×486 right now, so we’ll see what happens. Clips that I’ve rendered at 720×486 have looked bad in Avid before, but I assume that might be because the Avid sequence is 720×540, so it’s being scaled up(?).

Pardon my ignorance, like I mentioned, I’ve been away from Avid for a few years, so this is probably a pretty basic question: Is there a reason to work in 720×540 over 720×486 in Avid?

When I try to export the clip as “same as source,” I get an error that says “Unable to export the bin.” What does that mean?

No, AE is on a different machine, which is a headache in itself. The other crappy part is that I don’t even have a preview monitor on the AE machine.

When I try to use “same as source,” Symphony either says it can’t export the clip or just locks up. So I’ve been using “video & audio” and exporting the clips at the same resolution. I’ll try to export another clip right now using “same as source” to see if it works. Thanks for the advice.
