I need to render out a file as wmv format from AE CS3 but the option in missing from my drop down menu. I am able to export it as a wmv file but then it only renders out the first few frames and not the entire clip.

    any suggestions?

In AE CS2 there was the option to render as a wmv.

I’ve found the free Windows Media Encoder does a better job of making WMVs. Download that from the Microsoft site and just render out your comp as a Microsoft DV AVI file. Then, load that into WME and off you go!

I am working on a Mac and there is no mac compatible version of this encoder!

    Any other suggestions?

Oh, sorry. I’m a PC guy. I’m not up on Mac solutions. Hopefully someone else will chime in.

    Hi

You could use one of the flip4mac studio components for Quicktime.

Render out in a format you can open in Quicktime Pro then export and select ‘Movie to Windows Media’ and set your wmv options.

VisualHub can convert to WMV, and it’s $23.32.

Many happy VisualHub users around here.
    We have Flip4Mac.
Cleaner 6.5 also has a decent encoder for WMV, it’s $600 I think.

Caution, converting to WMV takes time, very intensive processing, tons of options. Study the readmes and manuals carefully, you will need to boost the gamma and change the contrast a bit. PC monitors work in a different color space than Macs.

If you want to make your clients move into the 21st Century, get them to use Flash Media Player and start delivering h.264 files directly from QT. You just change the .mov to .flv.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Flip4mac is offered in 4 different versions based on the users needs.
I think the studio version ($50) will allow WMV output from AE.

    Thanks for all the advice.

If i don’t want to invest in any of this software, what would be the most compatible file format in AE to render out the clips in for windows pc’s and youtube?
