April 26, 2008 at 10:10 am in reply to: FCP to AE and back

Dave I noticed that you mentioned this thread in another post and tracked it down.

I have created a sequence in AE (not touched FCP) and now need to get it onto tape. The AE sequence contains 78 layers staggered along the timeline. The project uses the PAL D1/DV preset and is 4:3.

    It contains:
    pre-comps
    QT Movies with photo-jpeg codec
QT Movies with Avid Compressed codec
    wav audio
3 adjustment layers with Lens flare effects

The material is a 50:50 mix of library footage (QT photo – jpeg) and animated material (QT Avid codec). Duration of the piece is 3 minutes.

I tried the “export to Premiere Pro Project”, opened it in Premiere and then rendered it. The adjustment layers with the lens flare appear as white, and the pre-comps are all wrong. Audio is good though! No joy there.

So exporting a QT ref for FCP is out the window as well for similar reasons.

So I assume I need to render a self-contained movie. Is my best route to stick to QT with Avid compressed (2:1) the way my pre-renders are, or should I use another method? And is there any difference using FCP or Premiere? As you might have worked out, my background is Avid hence my choice of codec.

Playback is via projector onto a large screen only, probably off a DVCam player.

As ever your advice and those of your colleagues is greatly appreciated.

    Scott

  • Really helpful reply Brendan – many thanks.

I will go down the Quad core route and look at the VMWare Fusion software, which sounds very good.

Thanks for clarifying so many issues. Please keep attached to this thread as I am sure to have a few more questions before bending the plastic.

    Thanks

  • Since my last post I have been searching for info about using Windows XP 64-bit with BootCamp. Much of the info is from forum replies in 2006 so things may have changed, but generally it doesn’t appear that a Mac Pro running BootCamp has drivers to fully benefit from 64-bit.

Say I had a quad core Mac with 8Gb of RAM and was running XP 64 bit via BootCamp, would each core be allocated 2Gb of Ram? If I went 8 core would 32-bit be better or would it still only “see” 3Gb of Ram? Does the Mac OS make a difference (is Leopard better than Tiger)?

Am I contemplating something that is really going to cause more trouble than it’s worth? How many question marks are you officially allowed in one post?

    Thanks

  • Brendan, thanks for your reply.

I didn’t know about Adobe cross-trading to Mac – that just adds to my decision making! I would probably stick to Windows since all my other software/plug-ins are windows and I presume I can’t split the license – or can I? Since a license for two simultaneous users is included I might – any thoughts on this. Of course a neater way of doing this would be to buy a Mac version of After Effects standalone. But are there any compatibility issues of moving a Windows created AE project to a Mac AE version?

64-bit Windows XP is somethings I have considered in the past (my PCs each have 4Gb RAM) but it is not compatible with some of my other software such as Avid. However since the Mac would be a very dedicated machine it would be OK. I presume there is no problem with the Mac running 64-bit. I wouldn’t even consider Vista.

This is one of those posts that seems to generate as many questions as answers, so I appreciate the help. I am sure others are thinking the same way.

Followed up in your other post on this subject, Michael.

  • Hi there.

    Michael.

I have exactly the same problem as you, using the built in material swatches. I am using After Effects 7 with Invigorator Pro v4.0.7.

I have a very complicated multi-layer 3D sequence with imported 3D objects and only the reflective parts are a problem. For example a chair with a non reflective cushion and metallic arms will only have faults on the arms.

A non-Nucleo render works fine. In fact it takes no longer than the Nucleo render which is unusual.

Be interested to find a solution rather than a restrictive workaround.

  • I contacted the RAM suppliers and they suggest I get the latest BIOS for my Sony laptop.

I have searched and searched the VAIO website but there seems no way to download any updated BIOS. The BIOS I have is as follows:

    American Megatrends v 2.42
    BIOS: R0080F1
    Euro BIOS: RF080F1
    Video BIOS: F1AM1114

I went to the American Megatrends site and they are quite willing for me to buy the BIOS but I can’t tell if it is an update or not as their numbers don’t seem to match mine.

    Can anyone offer some advice.

    Thanks

    Thanks for the reply.

I tried deleting the settings files and then putting back in the 2Gb of RAM, but the result was the same.

The RAM is compatible with the system and was supplied by Crucial.com. Kingston no longer do this type of RAM.

For the record the RAM is:

    2 of 1Gb 200-pin SO-DIMM 128MX64 DDR PC2700
The laptop is a Sony VGN-A297XP

    Any other ideas?

June 24, 2007 at 8:44 pm in reply to: DIO Runtime uninstall problem

    Follow up on the above.

Did eventually delete the string in the Registry without destroying my laptop. Re-installed the DIO runtime and then uninstalled it the usual way.

In fact this didn’t solve my problems with starting the Avid programme. It turned out to be a RAM problem – I had doubled the amount on my system and for some reason Avid XP Pro doesn’t like this.

I have created another post to try and solve this problem so please use the link if you have a similar problem.
