    Hi Flowmotion.
I have tried both versions but only the solid layer with the image as a color map works as a page turn.

I have tried every option I can think of and have ended up accepting that the comp will be “flat” and making sure the position of the camera doesn’t give it away.

  • Typically I bought Nucleo 2 days before the price drop, so now I want to find out if it is “worth it at twice the price”!.

    Couple of questions though.

    1. I have Zaxwerks Invigorator Pro using 3d 3DS imported models in my sequence. Using Nucleo to render out the sequence does seem to take longer than not using it. Steve – can you explain if this is right or settings can be tweeked to speed things up?

    2. Nucleo sent me a message about switching off some of the active processes to speed up the rendering. Looking in Task Manager I really have very little clue about which I can safely switch off and which I absolutely have to keep on. Is there a list anywhere of the processes that need to be left running when the PC is simply rendering a sequence?

    Thanks for a great product.

  • Speedyman – quite the best response to a post I have ever seen!

Looked at the WMV and downloaded the project. Expressions are an alien world to me at the moment so I appreciate your help.

My design has some variations that won’t make this example possible. I need to insert video into the pages and write up different text. I also need to vary the peel off speed, although I think expressions could do that too.

However you have opened up a few new ideas. I want to investigate the grow bounds effect.

Also I am now sold on the Zaxwerks layer warp plug-in which gives (finally) a really nice page turn effect with “true” 3D. It also avoids using two layers for each page (front and back layers – to give a shadow) and therefore I don’t need to worry about the switch point and where the camera is.

Once I get this right I will post a link to download the video. A million thanks for your help – I might get back and grill you further if that’s OK?

    Hi Dave.

Thanks for your advice but the problem remains with the collapse button switched on. Here are the options:

a.) 3D button OFF and collapse NOT selected – pre-composed layer does not respond to the active camera’s movements at all.

b.) 3D button ON and collapse NOT selected – pre-composed layer reacts perfectly to active camera moves but has two problems. First it has lost the 3D depth that Layer Warp has created. With a front-on camera this is OK but looks rubbish from the side (I know that this should be solved if the layers were collapsed) Second problem is that the page flying off gets cut off at the 720 x 576 boundaries of the original composition.

c.) 3D button ON and collapse selected – same result as a.) above

d.) 3D button OFF and collapse selected – same result as a.) above

I have also tried these settings on the Layer Warp layers in the pre-comp but it makes no difference.

    Any other ideas?

    Hi Jon.

The pre-render idea might work since I think I have found a workaround:

If I don’t collapse the final nested comp then it tracks the camera move OK and still produces the lighting shadows I need. The downside of this is that the page turn gets cut off beyond the original comps edges.

To get round this I reduced the size of the page in comp 2 so there was lots of space around it for the pages to fly off in to. I then quadrupled the resolution of this comp to keep the quality up when it goes back into the final 720×576 comp.

At the moment I need to keep the comps changeable but I could pre-render the final version before putting this in the comp as you suggest.

So far it is working fine with just two pages turning! I have the feeling I will lose depth when I add more.

I will post a link to the final version when it’s done.

    Thanks for your help.

    Thanks for this idea.

How do you parent from one comp to another – I thought you could only parent to another layer within the comp.

Also am I right in thinking that when you nest a comp into another it ignores any camera information from the original comp?

I think I have found a work around to my problem:

    Hi Jon.

Unless I am doing something wrong with the pre-render, it doesn’t work. The pre-render result again crops the edges of the page turn when I zoom out.

I will experiment with pre-render again in case this is a good solution.

Thanks for the advice – I need it!

OK. I should be fair about the poor old CC Page Turn. Further experimentation has shown that applying any effect to the second comp causes the 3D ability to fail.

There must be some rule here about what you can and can’t do. Can someone please point me in the right direction?

    Thanks

    Thanks for your reply.

I checked that everything was set to 3D – it was. I have stripped back the final composition to its smallest components and I think I have discovered the problem – it’s the CC page turn.

For some reason it is corrupting the nested comp. Even if it is applied but switched off the 3D move does not show. The Page turn effect has to be removed for the camera move to be seen.

This is, of course, a disaster. I can make the move work by not collapsing the page turn layer, but then the pages that are being turned are cropped as they fly off.

    Any ideas?

    Scott
