I will 2nd any recommendation for Kevin Monahan’s book. I have had the book, actually won it at the first FCPUG meeting I went to at NAB. It is always my go to guide for when I am bored and need some inspiration. Also, there are a lot of freebies out there. Walter Biscardi does some great freebie ones on the Cow here. You really can’t go wrong with any of the suggested ones so far. Just had to throw my vote in for MGE in FCP.

November 20, 2008 at 5:29 pm in reply to: Audio levels on “National” spots-A general rantI have worked at television stations fro 15 years before I set out on my own. Most of my time was dubbing these same spots into the house system. This happened way before digital. I can remember this being an issue back in 1994 at a local ABC station. I also remember something coming from a production house on the national level and the audio was out of phase. When mixed there was nothing but the levels were moving individually. We had to get a production team together, union shop, to use the studio audio board to fix the problem before we could dub the spot. QC has always seemed to be an after thought.
I feel your pain.

Hi Kevin, thanks for the reply and sorry about the slow response. I didn’t think anyone replied yet because I didn’t receive an email. ANYWAY, yes I did check that option for the other user. And all the users. I have even trashed preferences and tried that again. Repairing permissions now and doing the SUDO periodics. I’ll let you know if that works.

Sure thing. I have always been a Crucial fan myself, just never tried OWC, but lots of people swear by it here on the Cow. Let me know how it all works out. I’ll hopefully be ordering mine in a couple months.

If you are referring to the BRAND NEW Mac Pros I believe only OWC has the RAM for it. If you go to the otehr sites make sure you are buying RAM for the Apple Mac Pro (8-core Xeon 5400 Series) Desktop/PC. If you go to Crucial’s website they say that they do not offer RAM for this at this time. The NEW models take a different RAM than the first Gen Mac Pros.

December 13, 2007 at 7:49 pm in reply to: Keyed green screen appears during Cross Dissolve…What version of Final Cut are you using? One of my students was seeing the same thing in FCP 4.5 using the same or the Chroma Key filter. I gave him some workarounds but that doesn’t answer the obvious question as to why it is doing that. Interested in hearing replies of others that experienced the same thing.

It really wasn’t that bad. But he did point out to those in charge that they should have contacted the audio contractor and made them a part of the design plan. things like glass windows in the sound booth presented problems. And those in charge just want to keep costs down. So I don’t think they want to ask the contractor because he might try and sell them on the “right” countertops. I just wanted to get a second opinion on it. I wasn’t brought in either on the design plans. So some are just saying make it happen.

I just wanted to make sure that there was not an ideal material to use or not. Some of the plans that were made for this room were really looked down on by the contractor installing the equipment. I just wanted to cover my bases. I was just wondering if glossy would interfere visually, if wood would “sound” better in the room over formica. Those types of things from the people who work in these sounds rooms everyday. Thanks for your answer. I realize that I might be over thinking this room, but after the tongue lashing we got from the contractor/supplier of equipment, I really just wanted to double check everything.

I’m actually in the opposite situation right now. I have a client here in the United States that wants his DVD to be viewed in Germany. I needed to know what format you use there, PAL right? Is there anything else I need to be concerned with other than PAL versus NTSC? Thank you and have a great day.

August 16, 2007 at 1:14 pm in reply to: What’s the industry term for this transition?SO TRUE!! I use to work in live television in a news station in North Carolina. The Technical Director and Director argued during the news one time for 30 seconds, an eternity in Live News. For some reason the Director decided the refer to our Max 1 (Chryon Max channel 1) as CG 1. I had heard the term before but our TD had ONLY worked at that station and everyone called it Max 1. She had no idea what the Director was saying when he said CG 1. She tried to clarification for at least 30 seconds, before he finally caved and wen back to calling it Max 1. It was hilarious to hear them arguing, I was doing audio at the time.
Yes, I know that she should have known from the rundown what was next and put 2 and 2 together. She was new and so was he and we had other issues with the director that eventually had him reduced to a camera operator. She BTW went on the work for CNN doing TD work.
Funny story inspired by the proper terms “poem” above.
Have a great day.
