Sorry for the off-topic question, but I’d like to get everyone’s opinion on where to buy more RAM for the new Mac Pro I will be ordering today.

    http://www.transintl.com – has an 8GB Kit (4x2GB) 800MHz ECC FB-DIMM for $379

eshop.macsales.com – has an 8GB KIt (4x2GB) 800MHz ECC FB-DIMM, Certified for Mac by Netlist for $659 and Qualified For Apple Mac Pro for $399.

    http://www.crucial.com – has an 8GB Kit (4GBx2), 240-pin DIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 memory module for $829.99 … I don’t see an option for (4x2GB) at Crucial.

Any thoughts on which would be better to buy? What exactly is Netlist and therefore what’s the difference between Certified and Qualified?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Cory

Do a Search on this forum. This has been discussed several times over the past two weeks.

If you are referring to the BRAND NEW Mac Pros I believe only OWC has the RAM for it. If you go to the otehr sites make sure you are buying RAM for the Apple Mac Pro (8-core Xeon 5400 Series) Desktop/PC. If you go to Crucial’s website they say that they do not offer RAM for this at this time. The NEW models take a different RAM than the first Gen Mac Pros.

Thanks Scott, I went ahead and ordered 8GB from OWC today. It says it’ll ship by Tues. Jan. 22, but I’m not sure that’s realistic at this point. Anyway, hopefully it comes before the 2-4 weeks it’ll take for the Mac Pro itself 🙂

Sure thing. I have always been a Crucial fan myself, just never tried OWC, but lots of people swear by it here on the Cow. Let me know how it all works out. I’ll hopefully be ordering mine in a couple months.

    Cory,

Did you go for the RAM Certified for Mac by Netlist? Were you able to discover the difference between the two types of RAM on OWC? Does anyone know the difference?

    Thanks.

I didn’t go with the Certified, but rather the Qualified. They both have lifetime advanced return so I feel safe in that decision. I believe (but others can answer this more accurately) is that the Certified runs through a few more tests, but the Qualified runs through a few less (but still a lot).
Someone please correct me if I’m wrong on this one.

I bought the Qualified for the last version 8-Core from OWC (600 MHz vs 800 MHz for new 8-Core). Works great. OWC had no problems recommending the qualified over the Certified. Said there wasn’t really any difference but price.
