Banding is usually found in a gradient where there’s not enough “steps” of color values to make up the gradient, so the steps become visible. A workaround, which may or may not work for you, is to add noise.

Make a new layer and fill it with white, and make that layer the top layer. Create your lighting effect on that white layer, then change the white layer’s blending mode until you get the desired look.

That’s just a copy of the text, offset. One copy is white, over a copy that is black.

Sometimes when you do this, depending on the type of layer blending modes you’ve set, your result will not be as expected. If this is the case, simply flatten your image (or if that still yields a strange result), save the image as a TIFF or JPG (which will automatically flatten the image AND retain the look).

I’ve tried Vertus and didn’t like the results. Sometimes you just have to do this by hand. I have not come across a great solution from any company including Adobe.
