Good news Conor. Its pretty easy to do with more than one tool and technique. one of the easiest ways is to use the popular plug in trapcode shine. Set the threshold really low to only get the ‘hottest’ colors and animate the length to taste. Obviously set your colors to white if thats what you want. You will want to set your source point far away from the content so the ‘rays’ shoot more vertical upward.
Or you could simply color key out the white areas on a separate layer,
and use an add composite mode and directional blur the heck out of it.
Because the Directional blur goes both directions, I would pre comp it first, THEN blur it, then matte out the blur that goes downward with a
basic, feathered bezier mask.just two ways you could go.

February 26, 2009 at 2:40 am in reply to: Complex shadow from live action onto 3D logothanks for the kind words on my reel. The actor in Red was shot against a plain white background BEFORE I was even hired at Fox. We used him a lot. So I was able to get some of it to key ‘ok’. but believe it or not, I did basic gargbage matting combined with individual hand drawn mattes, hundreds of them ( maybe thousands when I take into consideration the whole campaign ) I would paint in my own shadows on a lot of stuff. (I won a national Gold Promax for the campaign for our ‘Home of Comedy’ promos using him) All the animation I did was concepted to fit the ALREADY SHOT footage. It was a backwards way of working, but we pulled it off. Im pretty fast at cutting mattes so I sort of relish the challenge of projects like that. Some of my favorite work involves merging reality with cg elements. Theres a lot of it on my reel. I hope to get some more opportunities to do it here in LA as I continue to grow my animation company.
Thanks again Hamish.

February 26, 2009 at 1:32 am in reply to: Complex shadow from live action onto 3D logoI agree, you have the two main images with mattes already. THe text and the person. I did something similar but with more elements about 1\3rd
of the way through my demo reel with 3 news anchors from Fox (right after a simpsons animation i did) I had to ‘fake’ shadows falling on numerous things. The soft shadows dont have to be super accurate to be convincing to the eye. If you have individual mattes for both the face of the 3d text and the edges it helps as well depending on your lighting and the persons position to the image. I would not use warps to ‘bend’ the shadow as it falls on the logo due to the fact that there are probably 90 degree angles and sharper edges on the text, calling for more of a ‘cut’ shadow.without seeing it, i cant be real specific.
good luck

thats funny,
they do a little clever timing and replacement of the ball, shooting the actors multiple times. If the ball leaves the screen they only have to
add their own ball. Character lobs the ball into a net so it does not come back into the scene. Relatively easy effect to do if you have access to a good environment to pull it off in. there are truly a number of ways to do that look convincingly.SuperNova

Id need a lot more detail to advise on the astronaut visor. Are we looking “through” the visor? or is the astronaut floating in space?
If your ‘faking’ it I would simply make a 3d visor and have the visor reflect an environmental reflection. The reflection would be whatever starry background was chosen as the background. Then composite in AE.
Starry backgrounds, again, all depends on whether you need a 360 degree capability or not. Hi resolution photography can look good if you match the grain well, there are good 3d solutions if your a hi end user of one of the big 3d packages. Sorry im not more specific, just not enough to go on…

is this a question, or an AD? No offense, but this is not the venue to advertise a product. I would think paying for an ad in support of the Creative Cow would be the proper way to advertise your product subscription.

well, pre comping is a basic AE task that involves taking multiple layers
and ‘combining them into one so you can more easily universally apply effects or transition to those elements alone. Its hard forme to advise you if you are unaware of basic pre comping.Respectfully, consult your AE manual on how to, and what pre comping is.
good luck….

ok the smart aleck answer is to buy it!
Otherwise its rather easy to create. That said, its pretty time consuming. First you need the design sense to make an attractive flourish in Photoshop or Illustrator (my choice) then using a number of hand masks animate a wipe reveal at various frame rates. All this is seasoned “to taste” as far as pacing and the number of masks. Depends how much effort you want to put in. Me, im way old school, I believe in putting in the handwork in a detailed way giving me the most flexibility as far as options go. Pre comp elements to also do an animated scale
‘wobble’ as the pieces reveal. You may not need to pre comp based on what your final goal is.Good luck..

I have to agree with Dave. Personally, I would not spend your time
on a look like that for your reel. There are plug ins that basically do that in 1 step. Just my opinion. It never hurts to practice things however.
good luck
