July 14, 2013 at 9:16 am in reply to: AE CC and GTX680 Mac Cuda Support

Excellent Todd…. the Nvidia 680 mac edition was purchased by a TON of us mac AE pros to help keep our systems snappy enough.

I ‘manually’ activated it in CS6… not one issue. Im not a fan of manually doing anything so im nervous to try it again with CC… Its fair to allow us to use it at our own ‘bombing’ risk… to block us in any way would appear hostile..

us Mac AE users feel like step kids vs our windows AE users over the years performance wise. So im really glad to hear your hands on attempts…

I would modestly BEG…. LOL… you look at the 2 gb 680mx card in the 2012 iMac as well which I believe would be the other main machine pros turned too to buy time until the new mac pro is released.

Its plenty powerful enough and appears very closely related to the 680gtx the performance of the gtx 680 using sapphire plugs, Monsters gt, is AMAZING and stable in my use at 1080p work…. fyi….

  • easily the little thing I struggle with that i think can be done… but I can never get it done easily is the organization and availability of ALL the emitters at once.

so I dont have to open library after library to find the smokey looks or sparkly or whatever…. anything to visually help me quickly see the emitters… all of them

    with the preview… 🙂

July 14, 2012 at 6:20 am in reply to: Changing HDD to SSD on AE Global cache and OS

OWC’s Mercury Accelsior PCIe SSD seems to still be expensive but an amazing alternative too a raid array.
A lot of us AE animators are doing 10 – 60 second projects… not long form work and dont need terabyte sized raids for current projects. Im like you Donald in wanting every ounce of performance from AE… the OWC card IS raid 0 and from all the reading ive done with AE 6 and its global cache I would get 2 of these… one for the startup drive…. one for the cache…. then the raid for storage and reference… like the many reviews say… once you experience the Accelsior SSD and working in that env you NEVEr want to go back… time is money and to be able to turn a 4 yr old mac pro into a screaming demon id install 2… a 240 boot and a 480…. these are UPGrADEABLE, and OWC has NONE of the issues Vince mentioned as far as degredation and lifespan… these are the real deal and prices are shrinking by the month… for about 1k you can do what I said and get scorching read write speeds… SILENCE… and buy time for the 2013 mac pros we were promised… even transfer your Accelsior into the 2013 MP…. no brainer for a lot of us… if I was working long form, editing etc… I may just do the startup… but im greedy for speed… max ram… max boot drive and max Cache drive and Nvidia Card w/Cuda for AE… then use the cheap raids and drives for fast local storage of projects and source you want quick but not ssd quick access too…

  • graphics converter… and YES… LOL i have NOT rendered these sequences in over 10 years… however.. I am a pretty diligent archiver and a ‘few’ of my older animations ‘still make the cut’ on my rather complex demo reel… it never occurred to me that they would somehow become unreadable in the future so I never converted them…. just kept them in their folders… there are only really 3 or 4 things tops that this relates too… but important none the less… one of the files… get ready… drum roll please… is from the old 3d app infini-d 3d LOL but ill NEVER reveal which one it is… it still holds up today and shows a tiny bit of a look I dont have on my reel… im a “generalist” so my reel tends to be pretty dense with as much variety and techniques I can fit… that of course are of a quality level I care to display…

    thanks all again…

    June 10, 2011 at 11:22 pm in reply to: 1024 x 768 video playback on ipad2?

no time now… im moving this weekend and wont be set up again till early next week Todd… my wonder lies more with Apple… its easy to create a 1024 x 768 30fps progressive animation in After Effects… AND output it as an h264 movie… no real need for device central unless im missing something here… but STILL that movie when dragged into my itunes… then dragged onto my Ipad2 icon prompts the “nice try” message… im sure its something small… i do LOVE the concept of device central… not sure quite how to use it well… but i dont read manuals much… lol….

anyway… all other movies.. 1280×720 720×486 640×480 and itunes purchased HD movies all load and play beautifully… I just want to maximize my Ipad presentations to the max… every little creative advantage is important to me… Id like to show and position my widescreen movie in a way that leaves me a “lower thirds” type area for me to add all kinds of related animation or notes… given the tablet is more of a 4.3 ratio…

ill stay on it Todd and report anything I may find… no worries…. just gotta start packing now YUCKKKKKK
