Fake basketball shots
Posted by Alejandro Suarez on February 23, 2009 at 10:59 pmI was wondering how they fake all those really long basketball shots?

they do a little clever timing and replacement of the ball, shooting the actors multiple times. If the ball leaves the screen they only have to
add their own ball. Character lobs the ball into a net so it does not come back into the scene. Relatively easy effect to do if you have access to a good environment to pull it off in. there are truly a number of ways to do that look convincingly.SuperNova

February 24, 2009 at 5:11 pmThat’s about right… Though I am told they actually did it for real in the third Aliens movie, where Ripley throws a no-look three-pointer over her shoulder.
If your talent is good at pantomime, you have the mime everything sans ball and comp the ball in, at that point it could do anything you wanted. If they use a real ball, you just paint it out at some point in mid-fligth and replace with a fake ball on a new layer, and again, make it do whatever you want. Or shoot the whole thing with practicals, and just use a seamless wipe between versions where the ball departs in one shot and returns in another. You can also green screen it, but usually don’t have to. These shots are way easier to do if the camera is locked-down. Adding motion tracking complicates matters a lot.
