There are overlays in both Vegas and DVD Arch that you can turn on showing title and action safe areas for TV’s. Unless you change you settings in Vegas to 4:3 and loose part of the actual video, you need to take in account that not all TV’s are going to show the picture all the way to the edge. Just a fact of life.
The one in Vegas is a grid icon next to the preview quality label on the top of the preview window. In DVDA you need to choose them in the VIEW drop down menu. There will appear as dashed white boxes over the preview and such. Use these as your guides when doing titling.

I would set it for my highest media, or what you plan to render too…when I have multiple file formats I use the one that is the highest or the most common format that I have (like widescreen vs 4:3), etc…if you have multiple formats and are planning on delivering in just one format (like WMV or MPEG2) I would go with my delivery format. If you need to render to multiple formats, so with the most common aspect ratio or highest quality format…hope that helps!

I always set my project settings based on the footage I am using. I do a lot in HDV so I use 1440×1080, if I am using DVD widescreen (or DV widescreen) I use 702×480 widescreen..etc. That way you are in your native format to render out to whatever format you wish.

To my knowledge imacs are not upgradeable for ram, HD or other PCIe cards (at least not in the past). The Pro’s are the only one’s that allow you to upgrade these items yourself. Also, if you wanted to use bootcamp, you can use PC based programs, I have students who use Mac’s that use Vegas with bootcamp all the time. If you want to save $ AND be upgradeable…why not go PC based?

I agree with Mike on all accounts. I have used TY discs for years with about a handful of toaster…and for DL, Verbatim is the bomb..and TY does not make DL discs..
I always burn TWO masters and send them along, I am a Disc Makers partner, and they always check the discs for errors before making a glass master. That way if you have issues, they already have a backup.. Good luck!Scott Francis

Trust me, I wish it did have S-video!!! My clients concern is that the video quality will suffer on HD tv’s, so trying to get a better pick is what I am trying to do…hence the “upconverting”…but alas it still is BetaSP and NOT HD….thanks!

i am aware of the s-video on the FX1, I use that from a S-VHS when I do VHS transfers. Unfortunately my Beta player does not have s-video..I thought it did when I bought it. Is using the co-axial through a tuner better than composite…it has been a LONG time since I have done this…thanks for the help.
Also, I need some work flow to “upconvert” this stuff to 480i if possible…thanks!Scott Francis

I would “Echo” a little bit of John’s suggestions. However I would look at the Presonus firewire interfaces as well. I have used them and like their preamps better than anything else at that price point. They build ALOT of preamps that are not interfaces and they excel at this.
As far as speakers, I use the M-audio B5’s on my 2nd video editing machine and they are OK, (they are a bit mid rangy and weak in the low end) but decent for the price…also look into KRK’s, Mackies and Yamaha powered monitors as well. I use a KRK 2.1 system in my recording studio and LOVE them, but that was a $1000 rig. I use EVENT ALPS for my main video rig with a sub, but they sadly, discontinued them. A good mic is also very important for voice overs and get a decent large diaphragm condenser mic for that, don’t forget a pop filter as well. CAD makes some nice ones that I use in my studio as well as Rode and Sterling….good luck!!Scott Francis

I would like to pass on a recommendation from a camera repair shop. I had to get my Sony FX1 repaired about 2 years ago, they recommended (as you stated) that you pick a name brand and stay with it…they only ones they DO NOT recommend is Maxell. They stated that for Sony cams, they are to dry (not having enough lubricant) for these machines and since I had to have the transport replaced in a relatively low number of hours on my FX1 I listened to them. I switched to JVC and Panasonic tapes and have had NO trouble since with 4 other camcorders as well. If you DO switch, just be sure to clean the tape heads and you should be fine. Again I am just passing this along, they did not recommend any tape to me, just NOT to use the Maxell, so I trusted them. A $700 repair for a year and a half old camera and needing to ship it is CA (I am in PA) made me pay attention. I also capture everything to laptops now and use tape as a backup, so I do not need to recapture and put more hours on the tape heads. It is not “threatening to migrate” it is TRUE ISSUES that make me and others look at another program. I have used Vegas 8 and done THE EXACT SAME PROJECTS (as in number of cams, effects and relative length of projects) from one year to the next and had issues with version 9 and NOT version 8 on the SAME SYSTEM!!! And yes my computer is more than capable of doing the projects I do! Having the same issue across 3 computers also seems to me to be a “bug.”
I often find your replies condescending and rude when you look at those of us on the post who have true problems and have been in the business for years and make it seem like we are the “odd” ones or our systems are unstable…There have been TRUE BUGS with version 9 and Sony needs to update there program to utilize quality graphics cards for preview. When it uses one of 4 cores to allow you to “preview” and memory issues happen on a constant basis this is truly frustrating to those of us who have used and rely on Vegas for our lively-hood and keeping our business names in check by making deadlines and keeping clients happy. I have spent numerous “all nighters” to find workarounds for Vegas issues just to make deadlines. And that IMHO is unacceptable.
So I would appreciate you keep that in mind when you reply, please understand that many users have true issues and that there are those of us who experience them and they are real. I am happy for you that you seem to have had little issue with version 9, but some of us have had nightmares. When I state that Sony needs to have a great release in Version 10 (whenever that may be) it is because I love using Vegas, have NO desire to migrate, but need it to be something that I can truly rely on and that keeps up with other platforms and hardware. I use almost all of Sony products and have been for over 13 years….
OK I will get off my soapbox now and appreciate you reading my rant…good luck in all you do and long live a good Sony Vegas!!Scott Francis
