Activity Forums VEGAS Pro I’m in a pickle

I am currently using Vegas 9c, and, gauging from some of the gripes I’ve seen about 9e, figured I was safe with staying this way (until they come out with 9f, maybe. . .).

BUT, working on a video which also has a few jpegs, tiffs, pngs, etc. in it and–SURPRISE! SURPRISE!–images don’t render. Either blackness, or whatever was on the lower track.

Checking out the forum, I guess this was an issue with 9c, but I’m even less sold on 9e–sounds like it’s nothing but a big problem.

SO: I need some input. 9e users. . .how are you faring these days? Should I take the dive? Any word as to when Sony might come out with an update to fix 9e?

For the time being, I think I will nest these photos in on my old computer and Vegas 7. But, you know, it shouldn’t have to be that way. . .

    Thanks.

Like a lot of users, I’ve never had any problems with 9e.
I suggest that you try it and see for yourself.
If it doesn’t work properly for you, you can always uninstall it and go back to 9c.

I do all of my work on 9.0e and I don’t have any problems. I don’t know what you’ve been reading but all software of this complexity has bugs so you will always find someone who has an unfortunate story. By using 9.0c you have all the bugs that were fixed in 9.0d and 9.0e still broken! That doesn’t make any sense to me. Update to 9.0e and see for yourself. (you can always go back very easily)

9e has been pretty stable for me other than the memory issue when rendering, but that seems to have been resolved by setting my dynamic ram preview to 0mb when I render (I STILL think that having that matter when you go to render is STUPID, but I shall live with it). Vegas IMHO had better get there ducks in a row for version 10(which I REALLY hope they do since I have used it since version 3), or they are gonna loose customers to Premiere. But I digress, 9e has been the most stable for me in the version 9 line…plus I like the PSD implementation!!

    Hope that helps!

“… or they are gonna loose customers to Premiere …”

    LOL!

First, for the OP, Vegas 9e is extremely reliable here, but I have been using Vegas since Version 3 and I have experienced zero crashes and only one bug in the generated media fx, which Sony fixed very quickly.

I suspect that you are reading the posts from three or four people who are experiencing problems that no one else can reproduce who scream BUG as often and as loudly as possible.

So, lose users to Premiere? LOL!! I assure you that hanging out on any Premiere forum will show you some real problems, (mostly Windows crashes) and a significant number of defectors swearing that they are moving to Avid or FCP.

So, don’t threaten to migrate – just go. If your PC is too unstable for Vegas, you will *really* be impressed with the “stability” of Premiere.

OP – don’t buy into the fear-mongering. Download 9e and try it. As previously stated, you can always uninstall it and reinstall an earlier version if you have to.

    Stephen,

It is not “threatening to migrate” it is TRUE ISSUES that make me and others look at another program. I have used Vegas 8 and done THE EXACT SAME PROJECTS (as in number of cams, effects and relative length of projects) from one year to the next and had issues with version 9 and NOT version 8 on the SAME SYSTEM!!! And yes my computer is more than capable of doing the projects I do! Having the same issue across 3 computers also seems to me to be a “bug.”
I often find your replies condescending and rude when you look at those of us on the post who have true problems and have been in the business for years and make it seem like we are the “odd” ones or our systems are unstable…There have been TRUE BUGS with version 9 and Sony needs to update there program to utilize quality graphics cards for preview. When it uses one of 4 cores to allow you to “preview” and memory issues happen on a constant basis this is truly frustrating to those of us who have used and rely on Vegas for our lively-hood and keeping our business names in check by making deadlines and keeping clients happy. I have spent numerous “all nighters” to find workarounds for Vegas issues just to make deadlines. And that IMHO is unacceptable.
So I would appreciate you keep that in mind when you reply, please understand that many users have true issues and that there are those of us who experience them and they are real. I am happy for you that you seem to have had little issue with version 9, but some of us have had nightmares. When I state that Sony needs to have a great release in Version 10 (whenever that may be) it is because I love using Vegas, have NO desire to migrate, but need it to be something that I can truly rely on and that keeps up with other platforms and hardware. I use almost all of Sony products and have been for over 13 years….
OK I will get off my soapbox now and appreciate you reading my rant…good luck in all you do and long live a good Sony Vegas!!

Thanks for the advice everyone. From the word that I’ve gotten from some of you (and with your reputations/experience), I think I’ll be safe going up to 9e–hopefully I won’t be bugging for knowledge about how to downgrade back to 9c (because I haven’t had many problems up till now, even with jpegs, etc.).

But my point wasn’t to start any controversy in this forum. I AM a Vegas fan (for all sorts of reasons), and want to stick with the software. However, I can also relate to Stevens gripes/warnings; I look at it as friendly advice more than anything else. Yes, I’ve checked out forums for other NLEs and see that they all have their problems. . .but one of the things I love about Vegas–and this is coming from my experience with V7–is its durability and reliability. It’s a flexible program that doesn’t need a lot to do a lot, and I saw that with 7 (which I’d be using if I could). And I was impressed with how the effort and concentration Sony put into the program, and the reviews it has received.

But as an aspiring professional it’s hard to maintain strict loyalty in a market dominated by people looking for Avid or FCP pros, while also having to account for Vegas’ limitations and quirks. For instance, having to explain to my client why certain scenes in her video’s rough cut were missing or black (because that’s where the stills were). (And yes, I’m still a newby who has a lot to learn, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not accountable to others, already. . .)

As for Premiere, I’ve never really taken it too seriously (based on what I’ve read from most reviews), but I DO appreciate the fact that it’s more-integrated into other aspects of the Adobe Creative Suite, and that can be a serious advantage.

Ultimately, I like Vegas and want to stay loyal to it. And I’m definitely adverse to the mac/fcp platform, despite its prominence in the field. One of the reasons why I’ve actively stuck with Vegas rather than switch to mac/fcp (when I had the opportunity) is in defiance of its prestige in the market, based on the supposition that macs are what ‘creative-types’–i.e. those who work with media–use. It’s a personal goal of mine to prove that you don’t need to stick with the ‘industry standard’ (just because it’s a matter of speculative consensus) in order to produce something worthwhile. And I DO want to stick with it. But I have to be practical when it comes to brand loyalty and any limitations that come with it.

I’ve been very happy with Vegas so far; I just want to continue to feel that way in sticking with it.

    Viva Vegas!

For what it may be worth, I had issues with a, b and c (and was doing other things when d came out), but I have not had any issues with e.

I went ahead and updated to 9e, did a couple of test renderings of my project. . .no problems.

    Just to let you know.
