    Hey All,

So I am doing a transfer from the larger tape version of Beta SP from a Sony BVW-22 player, into my Sony FX1 directly into Vegas. I have done a million VHS transfers but never Beta SP. I need to keep the footage as best as possible since these are for TV spots. The client needs this to look good. I need to know how to have the footage look as good as possible and minimize interlacing and noise, WHILE keeping the footage SHARP and CRISP.. (yeah right, I know)

I use Neatvideo, NewBlueFX, and other plugins as well.

Any help on “up-converting” this footage to the best possible quality for TV spots would be helpful. I tried Video Enhancer and it helped a little, my issue is that whenever I try to get rid of noise, I loose definition. (like this is new)
I have edited TONS of HDV footage and have used Neatvideo and other tools to help with noise white balance, color, brightness and such, but always deliver in a lower def format (LIKE 1080i to 720p and DVD), so I need some help here.
Also, what is the actual resolution of Beta SP? I cannot seem to find the specs anywhere…thanks again in advance!!

If your FX1 has the capability, transfer the Beta footage using the S-video connector as the quality will be higher than regular composite mode.
BetaSP was around 360 lines of horizontal resolution.
Keep in mind that’s tape resolution, not what the original camera used was capable of.

i am aware of the s-video on the FX1, I use that from a S-VHS when I do VHS transfers. Unfortunately my Beta player does not have s-video..I thought it did when I bought it. Is using the co-axial through a tuner better than composite…it has been a LONG time since I have done this…thanks for the help.
Also, I need some work flow to “upconvert” this stuff to 480i if possible…thanks!

It’s been several years since I worked with BetaCam decks and I was positive all models had an S-video jack on them.
Oh well, composite video from a BetaSP deck is still a very good signal.

Do NOT run it through a tuner first as that will degrade the signal a lot.
Take it directly off the back off the deck into your FX-1.

The signal from a BetaSP deck already is 480i so there’s no need to upconvert anything.
You may have gotten confused by my “360 lines of vertical resolution” statement.
VHS had, at best 240 lines of vertical resolution but still puts out a 480i signal.

Trust me, I wish it did have S-video!!! My clients concern is that the video quality will suffer on HD tv’s, so trying to get a better pick is what I am trying to do…hence the “upconverting”…but alas it still is BetaSP and NOT HD….thanks!

Well shot BetaSP should still look pretty good, even if it gets up-converted to HD.
    Good luck with the transfer.
