Shane,
I couldn’t agree with you more. I made a hell of a case to my Producer about this and all he could tell me was to ‘clear more room’ on our current hard drives, which isn’t a viable option for the amount of space needed, to which I explained this to him, and ya… he said he couldn’t spend that kind of money, and I said I need some sorta budget and $1000 is what I got. Soooooooooo ya.
Ugh.

Its not you, its them. lol
Unless you are feeding those LCDs true HD, the chances of them looking as crisp or sharp as they do everywhere else is slim to none, and I’d bet on the latter.
I’ve tried even hooking up an LCD monitor to our system via the AJA IO La and it doesn’t help, heh.
Maybe someone out there knows the secret, but if it makes you feel any better, you are not alone in the quest. lol. Though my general theory is that we are not sending an HD output into the LDC HD sets, thus the lower quality. But thats just my 1 cent.

Shane & David,
We are both on the same page here. I suppose I just wanted confirmation that that was the way to go. I just talked to a sales rep about a CalDigit 3tb RAID 5 unit, and a CalDigit 6tb RAID 5 unit (as all the company’s archived projects folders/files are scattered on about 5 external hard drives and 5 internal hard drives (between 2 Macs). So I’m gonna try to sell them on consolidating all their archives (which is around 1.5 tb’s) onto the 6 tb unit. But they’ll probably go for the less expensive 3tb unit, heh. But thats the way it is.
Thanks for your help, it is greatly appreciated!

Thats odd. Are you using an uncompressed timeline? I was just taking a look at the project where I did the same thing and it was an uncompressed 10-bit timeline I brought it into. Also the scale was at 75 and the aspect ratio was at -50 if that helps.
Good luck with it!

Create a 4:3 timeline, then grab the sequence that is your 16:9 timeline, drag and drop it onto the 4:3 timeline, and it will appear as a nested sequence. It should letterbox itself automatically, and give you the entire picture.

Right now we are unsure of the station reqs for HD. That answer should come in this afternoon.
And true, I realize it is an expensive question. But I’m doing some research for the company I work for. They feel the need to go HD, so I am here to assist, heh.
I’ve heard that the Sony HDCAM W500 is a popular choice for the output deck, does anyone know if this is the industry standard or if infact there is one yet? And is the Kona LH solid enough or should I be looking at the Kona 3 or 3X series?
I’ll follow up about what the station reqs are once I find out. But getting FCP to output HD and what card selection, maybe easier to answer right away… hopefully. 🙂

Thanks everyone for your input. I tried the tester for DVDxDV and I also gave MPEG Stream a shot. I agree with Andrea, to get the best quality from a DVD, getting hardware to run the DVD player into and to connect with the system is probably the best idea if I needed high quality stuff from the DVD.
But, for my usage it looks like I’ll be going with MPEG Stream, I like the fact that I was able to use the keyboard to go frame by frame and set my in/out points. DVDxDV I couldn’t go frame by frame, and just wasn’t as user friendly it seemed in my brief experience, plus MPEG Stream is free, heh.
Thanks again for the help!!

November 1, 2007 at 3:44 pm in reply to: FCP-Quicktime-BurnFolder-CD = Broadcast Quality?if you export it as uncompressed then that 1 minute clip should fit on a blank DVD, and if its uncompressed it’s broadcast quality!
