    Hi all!

I have a quick question for everyone/anyone who can help.

This summer the company I work for will be shooting and I will be editing for them what will end up being an hour long show for broadcast.

They are looking at using the HVX200 and shooting at 1080/24p. From what I understand the raw footage from that should be 1GB/minute. I talked to the Production Manager and he is anticipating approximately 16 hours of footage. This translates into almost a terabyte for just the footage itself.

Right now I am trying to figure out just how much storage/hard drive space I’ll need for this project alone.

So I am trying to figure out how much space I’ll need to budget for on top of the space that the footage will take up. Now I realize it all depends on how many layers/effects, etc that I am working with. The good news is it’ll be for the most part straight editing with minimal fx and layers. Which I am hoping will mean less rendering and less space taken up.

With that information, if anyone has an approximate idea of how much additional storage I should budget for that would be a great help! As usually our productions are 30-60 sec tvc spots, so this is foreign territory.

    Thanks!
    Scott

1080i60 DVCPRO HD…running at 23.98fps, takes about 48GB per hour. Sixteen hours will be about 763 GB. Chicken feed. You can get raw SATA 1TB drives for under $400. Slap a few of those in a MacPro and you are stylin.

However, we are fans of RAIDED storage, RAID 5 for protection specifically. You can get 4TB of storage for between $2000 and $4000, depending on the type an manufacturer. Caldigit, MaxxDigital, Sonnet all offer solutions. Just click on the banner ads on the sides of these forums to find good options.

    Scott,

Hard drives are incredibly cheap, with excellent 1tb drives now at just $254 (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145167). So, don’t spend your valuable time trying to figure out the minimum necessary to get the job done. Get yourself 3 or 4tb and don’t look back. Having the additional overhead will give you increased speed and with that comes better realtime performance and the fredom to think about important stuff such as the creative side of what you do.

    Shane & David,

We are both on the same page here. I suppose I just wanted confirmation that that was the way to go. I just talked to a sales rep about a CalDigit 3tb RAID 5 unit, and a CalDigit 6tb RAID 5 unit (as all the company’s archived projects folders/files are scattered on about 5 external hard drives and 5 internal hard drives (between 2 Macs). So I’m gonna try to sell them on consolidating all their archives (which is around 1.5 tb’s) onto the 6 tb unit. But they’ll probably go for the less expensive 3tb unit, heh. But thats the way it is.

Thanks for your help, it is greatly appreciated!

You can get raw SATA 1TB drives for under $300. A Seagate Barracuda is now around $240 at newegg.com with free shipping, and the comparable Hitachi is about $305, and the closest WD is $230. As per barefeats.com, the one to go for is the Seagate ST31000340AS:https://www.barefeats.com/hard94.html

Actually the Hitachi is just $254 — no need to buy the retail version, the OEM version is the same drive.
