  • FCP – Output/Hardware, looking for suggestions

Posted by Scott Douglas on October 26, 2007 at 4:20 pm

    Hi All,

Currently I am working with a reasonably new Mac Pro, and most of our projects are done in FCP. When we picked up the new Mac Pro, along with the FCP Suite 2, we also picked up Avid Express Pro with Mojo.

Currently we do all the editing in FCP, and then use Avid to output as it is setup with our BetaCamSP Deck.

This as most of you can tell, is a head scratcher, Avid was picked up as an out of town editor was only familiar with it. But personally, I am opposite, familiar with FCP and just learning Avid Express Pro.

Still, this workflow is ultimately frustrating, and not smooth at all.

So I was curious if anyone had any suggestions for hardware to look into that would connect me directly from FCP to the BETACAMSP deck. We currently have a AJA IO, but it is not being used, I was wondering if there is a better solution than that, as I am not opposed to spending the money if it means better quality control and a smoother workflow.

We use a Kona 3 board here but when I was researching a project that was FCP with BetaSP work tapes, somebody suggested using AJA and you said you had one of those, wouldn’t that work?

If you would prefer a card over the AJA io, just look at the AJA Kona series (the LH and LS do analog).

There is no quality difference with the Kona over the iO, so honestly, I see no reason to spend any more money. Just use the iO. It’s actually a much more higher quality and versatile piece of equipment than the Avid Mojo.

If you are looking for something that will work with both Avid Xpress and FCP, it does not exist. Avid will not allow that.

That is very good to know.

I am not looking for a piece of equipment to run both softwares through, as I do know it is not out there. Currently Avid is only being used to export, so it’s a matter of re-upping FCP with the BetaCamSP deck, and eliminating having to take the extra steps of going through Avid to output that is my main objective.

Why buy something new when you have a working solution already? If you were thinking about starting to edit HD, that would be a different story. If the problem is that you simply aren’t familiar with the workings of the AJA box, you can always call AJA support, they are easy to deal with and will help you get things setup properly and your job accomplished.

The one catch with our AJA IO is that it is a bit fried, we’ve had it for a long time, and prior it was not the most reliable piece of equipment. This has me thinking maybe there is a problem with our specific piece of equipment.

So the need to invest in either another AJA IO or a different product to solve the issue seems to be looming.

I’ll bet they are available for a song on Ebay…

When I bought a used aja io I thought it was fried too. AJA tech support got it up and running like a clock with the proper drivers for my current OS and version of FCP. All over the phone. The aja web site lists the drivers chronologicly so I’d check this out if I were you. The AJA IO rocks and will be faster to set up than anything else.

My hunch is if iyour IO is not scorched or doesn’t smell burnt inside then it is probably a driver issue.

Thats a good idea. However, I forgot to mention that it is the AJA Io LA, which does not handle audio at all. I’ve taken a deeper look into the AJA Io, AJA Io LD and AJA Io HD, so I suppose those are some options to solve the issue.
