Don’t I have to double then the Main Layer which contains my footage?
I try to describe my project more detailed: I have a skyline of the shore of Tel Aviv, shot from a boat.
I added an Adjustment Layer, with the A Light/Lens Flare Effect, which I use as Explosion.
The Flare should be behind the Skyline, so I added a mask to my Adjustment Layer, which Contains the Flare Effect, to limit it to the space in the frame above the Skyline (the mask has the shape of the Skyline).
Because, the thing was shot on a boat, I tracked the original footage and put the tracking Data on a Null Layer. The Flare Position I attached to the Null Layer’s Position, and I would like to be able to do the same with the Mask on The Adjustment Layer, which is limiting the Flare Effect.

Yes, I just read about it. I also work on FCP.
How fast does it work? I do a feature film and probably have to sync up more than 1000 Clips.

  • As many opinions as fish in the see. I work mainly on a MBP 17inch with 4GB RAM and a 512MMB Graphics card. Just finished a 75min HD Full Feature Film on that machine. Edited countless video clips for some of the biggest musicians in Israel. Both SD and HD – working as well with AE.
All my work under https://www.youtube.com/taikang is done with Apple Laptops.
For heavy effect rendering and Grading I also go on a big machine.
For the rest my MBP with a good 24inch monitor connected does the jobe very good.
I just have to be sometimes a little more patient with rendering times 😉

Of course, a Desktop is more decent and faster, but if you wanna stay mobile – the MPB is good to go.
I just edited also a RED video clip shot in 4k – no problem.

    Hi Jerry,

I hate to disagree, but I have to:
If the movie does not contain any graphics, titles or anything else genrated, but just pure film material you are right.
If you have Titles and things like that inside you will definately see a difference – I did dozens of tests with that cause I got really obsessed having the best output quality. And the difference between a DV Pal QT export and let’s say one with Animation or 10-Bit Uncompressed or ProRes is big.
What was your original footage shot on?

    Hi Doug,

I just had a similar job with my 16:9 shot Sony EX1 Shot HD Film.
After I did several tests – I can say, you can go directly from an AppleProRes Timeline HD into Compressor and make and SD of it. Just watch out for some things – take the Best Quality Preset anmd adjust it:

    1. Try to go for CBR not Two Pass VBR – around 7,2 or 7,4 Mbps
    2. Switch on the Frame Controls and Set the Resize Filter to “Best” – this way it looks still best possible when downsizing from HD to SD
    3. In the sound set the Dialog Normalisation to -31dBFS and set the “Compression Preset” under “Preprocessing” to “None”
