April 20, 2012 at 2:55 pm in reply to: Best Render Settings for Red/Cyan 3D

Thank you for your response. I would like to give an update for anyone who may come across this in the future.

I am converting old, public domain movies to 3D by masking out the elements I want to pop and applying the red/cyan to just those layers.

What I am finding with .mpg and DVD is that the red on the 3D effect renders out inaccurately enough to cause the double vision, because you are still seeing red through your left eye.

After trying Sony AVC and an Animation MOV, I have found Animation MOV to work the best so far.

    Thanks again for the replies.

Matt: My original file can be almost whatever I like: .mpg, .mov (any codec except ProRes), .mp4, avi. These videos will be small snippets that I will edit from a larger project in Sony Vegas, which handles nearly every video format except .ogg, ironically.

Curtis: Yup, I am aware that IE 9, Safari, and Chrome accept h.264 .mp4 files, which my editing system supports.

Thanks again, I am a video editor by trade and have just begun experimenting with HTML5.

Thank you all for your replies. I am using Windows Vista 32 bit.

The site is video heavy and dependent on the videos loading as quickly as possible, so I need to be able to choose a low bit rate and resolution.

Good point, Aleksey. I am going to see what Vegasaur can do for me. Thanks to all of you for the information.

Thank you for explaining that. That is a great trick. I have been using Vegas for 6 years and did not know that one. Always fun to learn something new.

Thanks for your reply, Steve. I have two batch render scripts and they both require me to create Vegas projects before rendering. That is a lot of steps for 150 clips. Would Vegasur require the same process?

Thank you. That was a good lead and worth looking into. However, it still lacks the usability we need. For example, you can’t add to queue while there are clips rendering and they only render one at a time.

I am very disappointed that Sony discontinued the Network Rendering.

  • I use a nifty little program called Wondershare Video Converter Platinum that costs $35. Renders very quickly and is very simple and reliable. If you want something free, look into MPEG Stream Clip.

A fun tip – you can also click on the audio and press “U” (for ungroup). This achieves the same effect.

  • Try this:
-Convert the video to your new format, making sure, content wise, it is exactly the same as the original source video
-Change the file name of the original video
    -Open the project
-Vegas will tell you it is missing the video (since you changed the file name). Select the option to “specify new location or video” and select your new, converted video.
-The project should open with the new video in place of the old one. And since it is the same, content wise, your edits should all be intact.
