Need to re-render project, but first must change footage from avi
I have a project that I completed editing and rendered to DVD. It was on a hard drive that crashed. The rendered video couldn’t be recovered, but I still have the project and all its files. My problem is that the project was done using Cineform avi, which, at best with Vegas 10, would crash a few times a day. But even after uninstalling Vegas and Cineform and reinstalling them several times, the project, along with all my other ones with Cineform avi, are basically inaccessible. As soon as I open the project, it locks up.
It’s about a two hour project that I shot, and I need to be able to convert the avi footage into anything useable at this point-mpeg would be fine since I’ll be rendering to DVD again. But I would like to do it so that I don’t have to recut the two hour video and Vegas still has all the references to the files. I know that’s probably not possible, but I’m wondering if anyone knows of a way to do this.

Try this:
-Convert the video to your new format, making sure, content wise, it is exactly the same as the original source video
-Change the file name of the original video
-Open the project
-Vegas will tell you it is missing the video (since you changed the file name). Select the option to “specify new location or video” and select your new, converted video.
-The project should open with the new video in place of the old one. And since it is the same, content wise, your edits should all be intact. -
Thanks, Sam. Do you know of a program that will convert my footage to mpeg (or anything else suitable, for that matter)? I’m having trouble finding anything through internet searches.

I use a nifty little program called Wondershare Video Converter Platinum that costs $35. Renders very quickly and is very simple and reliable. If you want something free, look into MPEG Stream Clip.
