Yes, Ed Troxel wrote a very good one—-and Vaast has an excellent one. I have used them both and they get the job done elegantly.

If this continues (and I have had the same issues on occasions) you most certainly have a hardware problem–most likely the cable or the control card in the drive. It will drive you absolutely batty if it is the control card because you will see the drive sometimes, and at others no—Rebooting will often get it back, but at other times no………..THats why I know longer use mainstream external enclosures—only premium for me-and better yet, I try to avoid external drives altogether.

Lower the amount of preview ram you use—this has been a problem—I wouldn’t go above 600.

Yeah unfortunately the mfgrs often send LCD’s with a pixel or more out—They cover themselves by allowing it in the warranty literature—and of course no one ever reads it.

I’m not sure if I get what you are trying to acheive—you shoot 16:9 but you want to see the letter box?–The only way you are going to do that is by playing back on a TV that 4:3—then it would show the letterbox—The other way would be to created a letterbox frame on video track one, but that kind of defeats the purpose of 16:9–

Its usually a function of what you feel comfortable with (all of the ones you mentioned are very good). Also, what format will you be editing in—DV—DVPRO50, HDV, HD, and so on.
