    Hi guys! Arrived back from New Zealand today. What a fabulous, beautiful place!!

    My Internet CRT PC Monitor had suddenly got incurably blurred whilst I was away, so I have just bought a new Acer 17″ LCD for AS$348.

    It looks fabulous, but one pixel appears to be dead – only shows up occasionally as a bright dot on a dark screen, and I will change it tomorrow – made me wonder – is this common?

    Hi peter,

    I have an LG 1710S screen – over twelve months ol. It devloped one ‘permanently ON’ pixel some 6 months after I got it. It used to annoy the heck out of me, but now I don’t even notice it, though it is over on the far left of the screen.

    Yeah unfortunately the mfgrs often send LCD’s with a pixel or more out—They cover themselves by allowing it in the warranty literature—and of course no one ever reads it.

    You may not be allowed to exchange it. All LCDs have, or will develop, dead pixels. That is the nature of LCDs. Most manufacturers have a maximum number of dead pixels they will ship with. The number is higher than 1 I think.

    The trick is to buy one from a place that offers no
    questions asked return warranties for 5 years.

    Also, you get what you pay for. the cheaper lcd’s more
    commonly have hot pixels out of the box. In the U.S. you
    could return it within 30 days at most places for a return.
    not sure the rule of the land in oz.

    I bought a Sony 19″ LCD with a 100 rebate and the whole
    unit cost a total of 600. I also bought the 5 year
    no hassle warranty. meaning if it has any hot pix whatsoever
    I can exchange it within 5 years and they will replace it
    no questions asked.

    I’ve had it for about 4 months now and its still dead pix free.

    5 years is great coverage.

    HP’s pixel policy is something like 0 dead pixels but there’s a bit of fine print, maybe no white pixels but some black pixels allowed. I’m sure they don’t give you a five year warranty.

    anyway, ask about the mnufacturer’s pixel policy before you buy, and yes this may be a good thing to get the extended warranty for.
