You stuck with it and it paid off. Nice work and thanks for the nice tutorial.
Cheers,

It sounds like the motion tracking behaviors would be of use. It would at least allow you to focus on the animation rather than both animation and position. I am not sure what you are trying to do but that might work for you. Good luck.

It looks like a color correction effect. If you look at the whites, they have a lot of cyan in them, leading me to believe the color was shifted. To be sure, we would probably need to know more about the lighting used, such as the color temperature of the bulbs.
In photoshop, chances are, the sky was “corrected” separately from the player, giving the image that artificial look. I would love to hear from someone who knows for sure how this is done. -
Looks good to me… In my opinion, fudging is ok as long as the message comes through and the result is not distracting. Unless this is for a client or public that would notice and get hung up on the “inaccuracy” I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Of course, each challenge is a learning opportunity and, I can totally relate to wanting to get it perfect, but it just might not be worth it to your client. Just an opinion.
I recently did a “3d” spinning coin in Motion. I ran smack dab into the limitations of Motion (you know, planes in 3d) and I wasn’t able or willing to start over with true 3d object. My workaround was to create the front and back faces of the coin and simulate the ridged edge with rectangular particles that I turned 90 degrees in relation to the faces. I duplicated the particles and played with the blend modes until I was pretty darn close. But you could see the edges of the far side of the coin through the closest side.
My workaround was as follows. I chose a fast rate of spin which slowed toward the end of the clip. The rate combined with choosing in and out points that did not make the lack of true 3d obvious, (and the fact that this was only 7 seconds long) made it possible to finish the project. In the future I will plan to work with a 3d object. Can someone who studies the clip closely tell that something is fishy? Sure. Will they? Maybe. But the spot is on the air now. And the message comes through despite the technical flaws. If I had been billing, I would have had to eat the time. But the client was happy in the end. And I learned in the process. -
Thomas,
My apologies for not getting back to you sooner. I started to post the response on Monday and I guess I got interrupted. Here are a couple links I found. I hope it helps.

You could use the magnetic lasso in Photoshop to select the outline of an existing map, then save your selection as a path. Then you could work with it in Illustrator before bringing it into Motion.

One way to achieve smooth camera moves from frame frame is to select the frame (or any object you want to frame) and record keyframes while pressing the “f” key. This frames the object automatically and works great for quick camera moves. I used it on a news intro where I had 4 drop zones moving along a circular motion path and I wanted the camera to frame each in sequence. This was a great workaround, particularly because at the time I wasn’t that comfortable working with cameras in 3d space.

That Target ad looks great. Particularly like the way the camera moves from scene to scene. It really brings you into the comic world by playing with the 2d image in 3d space. The “Pow” sequence, when she punches the air setting off a chain reaction and then jumps down from one frame to another, is well done. Kudos to the creators of that ad.

July 23, 2010 at 2:33 pm in reply to: Filter on 3d group causes objects to vanision from 2d, non-perspective, views? This appears to be limited to a version 4 issue. It does not happen in Motion 3.0.1.

You may want to check your RAM. Here is a link that I found that discusses some options for MACs. Good luck.
