November 4, 2010 at 8:39 pm in reply to: Advice on Jack-o-Lantern Effect?

I am not an experienced comp artist-but it seems that trying to line up the glowing eye etc is bgoing to be really challenging for a couple of reasons.
    1. You will have to try to match the edges exactly, which leaves a lot of room for failure. You would have no buffer area between the edge of the holes in the jack-o-lantern with the actor in the shot and the edges of the holes in the jack-o-lantern you are using to get the glow. You will have to work really hard to avoid seeing the edge of the hidden jack-o-lantern during actor movements.
    2. If you shoot a medium of the actor and a close-up of the jack-o-lantern, your edges won’t match up anyways because of lens distortion. As you probably already know, the wider your lens, the more distortion of shapes you are likely to encounter.

I would suggest shooting the glow in a way that fills the frame so that you don’t have to combat the edges. Maybe you could get a similarly sized pumpkin and carve out the entire side and light that. Then you could shoot the interior glow without worrying that when it is comp’ed, the edges won’t match up.
The other way you could do it is simply create a glow using lights in Motion to simulate what you would shoot in my suggested solution above.
I hope that helps! Good luck.

Folks, I was struggling with this issue for months although I hadn’t really focused on it. Turns out it was fixed in the Motion 3.0.2 update.
    See the release notes:
    https://www.apple.com/support/releasenotes/en/Motion_3.0_rn/
All I did to fix it was install this update along with a Quicktime update. and voila! I feel a bit silly to not have tried this before but apparently I am not alone. Remember, start with the updates that are essential. I wouldn’t update everything at once. You might end up with more problems and less of a handle on the situation. Good luck!

Thanks for the solution. I am having the same problem. i will try a preferences delete using preference manager first. Then I will try a reinstall…if anyone has any other ideas, please let me know. Thanks. I will follow up with my results.

  • Mark,
That seems counterintuitive to me that a static image in a 2D group would cause more of a processor load than a generator, even one that that generates a static image. What am I missing here?
    Thanks in advance,
    Sacha

    Software or hardware RAID?
Might the lags be occurring on “green” drives with built-in power management? I have been researching setting up a RAID and I have read about the lag issue with the “green” (“eco”) drives. Drives with their own power-down feature will create a lag in a RAID setup because they are constantly powering up and down.

I think ProRes is the best choice. HDV is really just a camera codec whereas ProRes is intended as a workflow codec.

Have you tried trashing your preference files? There are plenty of posts with information on how to do this. You might want to check out the Preference Manager software at https://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm

Just a suggestion. Im not sure it will work but anytime there is something squirrely going on with FCP, that seems to be the first suggestion out the gate.

    Stephen,
After looking at the samples of the Particle Metrix plug-in I agree that it is well worth the price. However, I can’t help but think that there are techniques or tweaks that are used to create those or similar effects that could be useful. Maybe, instead of explaining all the minutia of the entire process, there are lessons that can be extracted from the process that apply to other uses. Just a thought. I really appreciate all the knowledge that is put forth for public education on the COW. Thanks a bunch! Keep it up! 🙂

Do you use Keychain to manage permissions? You might try locking and unlocking your keychain. I don’t really understand keychain well but I believe I have resolved the same message by entering my password in keychain. Hope that helps.
