Glad to hear things are working out.
If the files on the bad disk are mainly render files, better to just re-render than trying to copy them over. When trying to rescue your files from the bad disk, make sure it is plugged directly into the computer and not daisy-chained through other drives.
Also, try using a different firewire cable. It may be that the cable you are using is damaged.
Copy across any other files you need from the bad disk. It is very unlikely that you will be able to have it repaired once it goes bad. If you are able to have it repaired, it will be too expensive any way.

– Run Disk Utility, verify disks and repair permissions.
– Ensure that your media and system drives have at least 10% free space
– Ensure you are not using media on a USB drive
– Create a new project and copy your files across to the new project
– Close any open sequences you are not using, so that only the sequence you are currently working on is open.Ryan Spanger

What format did you shoot in?
What is the approximate length of each clip?
Did you log and capture or capture now?
Did you use firewire to capture?
Does one clip slowly drift out of sync, becoming increasingly out of sync as time passes, or is it constantly out?Ryan Spanger

Make sure it is firewire and not USB.
USB is not good for editing video.Ryan Spanger

It really depends on what you are editing, i.e. DV or HDV, whether you are simply doing straight cuts or using a number of effects, transitions layers etc. It also depends on how much footage you will be working with.
If you are working with DV and simply doing straight cuts you should be fine with your current setup. If you need to do rendering on anything more complex than basic transitions you will probably find the time that it takes frustrating.
Adding more ram will definitely speed up the system, but not enough to cope with anything more complex than simply rendering basic transitions (without it being too slow and frustrating)
If you intend to continue editing on your own system on a regular basis then you should start making plans to invest in some new hardware. If you are pretty much doing just straight cuts, and this is a one-off or occasional thing, you should be able to get away with your current setup.

Are you capturing through firewire, or through a capture card?
What models are the cameras you are using to play back?
