Any of Angelo’s option would work. Here’s one extra for ya, but this is before you drop media onto a timeline….

Before you drop your clips onto a timeline go to them in the browser inside of CS6 and right click on the file–>Modify–> Audio. Once the dialog box you can tell CS6 to interpret the audio as a Stereo pair. Click ok and then create your timeline and drag your newly interpreted footage onto the timeline.

If you go the Adobe route, I’d recommend downloading the free trial of CS6. CS4 is 5 years old (released in 2008) and may not support all the formats in the same native way that CS6 now does.

In order for FCP to read MXF files you need:

(1) The correct plugin installed from whichever camera manufacturer is producing your flavor of MXF.
(2) The entire card copied over exactly as it appears on the card. The entire folder structure must stay in tact or everything goes south. You cannot copy over just the MXF files. The folders, XML, and MXF files need to be kept in tact.

Adobe Premiere Pro can usually read the files without the card structure. You could download the free 30-day trial, ingest the clips, and export them as ProRes if necessary

If you are using the default CS6 keyboard commands “Shift+Z” is not among the defaults (unless you switch to FCP7 layout). If keeping the standard CS6 shortcuts you will have to add it as a customized shortcut. You likely did that at some point in the past…

Just re-enter it and you’ll be good to go.

You will be fine. ProRes is a visually lossless codec and stands up pretty well to re-encoding up to around 5-7 generations. 1 or 2 will have virtually no impact on your footage.

Academic licenses are not legally allowed to be used in commercial installations (i.e. for-profit work). They are sold to schools/students at a heavy discount to use and learn on, as a non-profit institution.

As far as the software itself, it is identical to the “commercial” version. The EULA (End User License Agreement, the legally binding contract you’re essentially signing by installing and running the software) is what is different.

You’ll need to transcode to a mezzanine codec. Something like DNxHD would work since you’re on a PC, but I’m not sure if Vegas can read/export that codec.

Otherwise, you’ll have to look a different type of codec – Motion JPEG, JPEG 200, DVCPRO HD, or a MPEG IMX – for your intermediate. Resolve 9 can play h.264 files, but it’s not the workflow I’d recommend.

Jeff – I didn’t know that PPro could take VOB files right off the disc. That’s good to know. Nice tip.

The reason I recommended transcoding is if he wanted to get to other apps for graphics or color correction. Those probably wouldn’t play as nicely with vob files.
