Best 7″ Monitor for shooting with 5d Mark III
Posted by Warren Eig on April 17, 2013 at 7:56 pmHey all,
Was looking for a little advice. I’m looking for opinions on the best 7″ monitor to shoot with. I’d like Waveform/Vector-scope if possible. Also HDMI in/out as well as SDI in/out. If at all possible, HDMI in from camera and SDI out to a larger on set “Video Village monitor.”
Is this too much to ask for?

April 17, 2013 at 10:26 pmI’m a big fan of SmallHD. Their monitors are rock solid, accurate and affordable. I have 3 of them (DP4, DP6, and AC7). If you’re looking for a 7″ screen you’d be looking at their AC7 line:
https://smallhd.com/products/ac7/You can run them off their own battery or from DSLR batteries (Canon/Nikon mounts sold separately).
Two thumbs up for them.

April 18, 2013 at 12:26 amHi Warren. I just bought the Ikan D7W at NAB. Beautiful image, waveform and vectorscope. You might still be able to get an NAB discount.

April 25, 2013 at 9:05 pmThanks for all the input. I’ll actually be field testing a Swit 1701FE monitor next week. I don’t know the company but they are sending out a test unit. I’ll post back with a review.

Please report back. I’ve never heard of them and I’d be curious how the device performs.

I just received the monitor from Swit, this Friday – May 10. I’ll put it through some test over the next week or so and then will write and post a review. So far the build seems quite good. I spoke to Swit Friday after it arrived and mentioned the comparison to the JVC monitors. I was told from the Swit rep that JVC’s 7″ & 9″ monitors are made by Swit. The larger JVC monitors are not.

I look forward to seeing what you think. If possible, can you take some pictures and post them? I was at their website (which could use a serious revamp) looking through their lineup but didn’t find a lot of pictures showing where the connections sit, mounting points, etc. It seems to offer several options for input and output (loop-through).
It looks to be a cost efficient monitor. I do wonder if you had a side-by-side of Marshall or SmallHD or Ikan how the Swit would stack up.
I appreciate the follow-up!

May 29, 2013 at 2:18 pmThanks Warren. I saw your blog post go up and I’ve only been able to skim it. You pack a lot info in there and I haven’t had the time yet to dig into it.
Seems like you liked it overall though. I appreciate the follow-up!
