I buy most of my FW drives through Other World Computing (macsales.com). I like their drives and they don’t seem to over charge.

I’d upgrade to FCS2.
As for the capture card, if you’re staying SD footage, I’d look for an old Decklink Extreme (SD only version) on ebay. It’s a good card and you can get a great deal on one. If you’re looking at new cards then:
– AJA has great cards and great support
– Blackmagic Design has good cards and support has been difficult to reach in the pastI wouldn’t go with any other card other than these two.
As for the graphics card, if you can find a ATI X800 XT or X850 XT then go for it if you will be using Motion or Color. If you’re not going to be using either of these programs, don’t bother upgrading.

Yes. It’s the Media Manager. It’s not as simple to use and AE’s, but it will get the job done.
NOTE: If FCP says it has a problem with reconnecting a clip, look into it because 50% of the time, it’s not lying. As for the other 50%, well we just learn to live with it.

You’ve found one of FCP’s weaknesses.
First off, FCP doesn’t track the date of creation of sequences. Only the date modified.
Second, finding and managing any columns in FCP’s browser is difficult and doesn’t make much sense. Hopefully the next version sees an upgraded browser.

You’re going to need to use media manager. It can do what you’re looking for.
If you’re not sure how to use it, crack open the FCP manual for starters.

It works on FCP 5.1 on my system. You could try deleting your render files with the render manager, using opacity keyframes to do the transition instead of a dissolve transition, or restarting and deleting your preferences.

Are you sure? I don’t know of any modern deck that doesn’t have composite video out. (I might not get out much though.)
AJA has an SDI to Component and Composite converter that we’ve used since the original Kona SD card.
It looks like there are several options on AJA website.

Though if you’re going to spend that much, you might go ahead and buy an AJA IO LA or a card for a tower or something.

You could also try using Nattress Standards Converter.

The new iMovie is suppose to be compatible with AVCHD. You might be able to use it as a way of converting it to another format that is FCP compatible.
Or you could digitize it in over HDMI using a mac tower and a blackmagic intensity card.
For basic everyday editing in HD, I’d suggest using DVCPROHD which ranges from 5.6MB/sec to about 15MB/sec.
