The graphics card really only helps the performance of Motion and Color. Unfortunately, the there aren’t many speed tests with these cards yet.
If you’re waiting for ATI to introduce a new card for the new Mac Pros, it could be a very, very long wait. My thought is that if it was only 3-5 weeks out, then they would have already listed it as an option like they did with the ATI X1900 XT (that was like a 6 week wait when the Mac Pros were first introduced).
With the exception of Microsoft Office :), graphics cards are probably the slowest updated part of the mac world.
I would wait a couple of weeks to see how the current ATI and Nvidia cards compare, but then go for it.
You should keep an eye on barefeats.com. They’ve already posted some speed test that might help you

Just recently I read an article about a photo journalist who went to the middle east and used an HDV camera instead of his still camera. By doing this, he was able to change the shutter speed to be really fast so that each frame was nice and crisp. By doing this, he had thousands of stills to choose from, which was both good and bad.
One advantage that he mentioned was the ability to capture a rocket firing out of a helicopter. That’s pretty cool. The man said he thought that using a video camera for stills was definitely the future.
But as far a quality goes, my Nikon D80 knocks the socks of the HVX200. Two huge differences are quality and resolution of the image sensor and quality of the lens. Even if I just shot at 1920×1080 on my D80, the images are going to look a lot better than if I just used a HVX200.
But back to your question, I don’t know the print world so I can’t answer the question of if 1920×1080 is large enough to be used in a magazine. I’m sure it would work, but there’s probably some size that you shouldn’t pass because it would be too grainy.

I’d go with the MacPro because I rarely edit away from the office. When I do edit way from the office, I always miss the nice speakers, room, dual monitors, broadcast monitor, refrigerator with cold beverages, mood lighting, etc.
I really just use my MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz for web, email, chat, etc. (But every once in a while it comes in really useful away from the office).

I’d upgrade now, but personally, I wouldn’t spend the extra $1600 on the 3.2 Ghz processors. I’d much rather put that money somewhere else like a AJA capture card, better storage, etc.

You might try changing the sequence field dominance to “NONE”.
Generally, FCP text tools stink. I’d use motion instead if you care about how it looks. Consider Motion as a text plugin for FCP if that helps you open it.

I’d buy the new MacPro 2.8 Octacore machine with a Intensity Pro card. The Intensity Pro will digitize over component, s-video, or composite and will take the place of the firewire box that you have.
But the new MacPros have got to be about 6-8 times as fast as what your using currently. It will really me nice.

I’d get the Intensity Pro card so it’s an actual video out to a TV over HDMI. That would be better than another graphics card.

Panasonic lists the BT-LH2600W at $5000. B&H Photo Video has it listed for $4000. Maybe you were quoted with extras?
I’m waiting for NAB to compare the eCinema FX to the other monitors in that range, but it lists for some where between $4000-$5000.
If TV Logic is at NAB, then I’ll look at them too.

That system should handle your formats well, but if you deal with digibeta, then you’ll have to digitize it over component instead of SDI. Not a big deal, but you’re going to analog instead of staying all digital.
But then if you go with an HDSDI card, then you can’t digitize the HDV footage over HDMI to edit in DVCPROHD or maybe even PRORES.
Have you looked at speakers/mixer?

With the quad channel card, you could connect two Xserve RAIDs to one MacPro using only one card slot.
