I’ve got approval for an edit system upgrade and need your help!
I currently run FCP HD on a Dual 1Ghz PowerPC G4, running OSX 10.4.11 with a 23″ Cinema Display.
I import all video and audio via firewire using a ProMax DA-MAX+ Media Converter.
I use a lot of BetaSP file footage as well as SVHS, VHS and 3/4″ SP. I’ve been using using a Canon XL1 to aquire MiniDV, but I recently purchased a Panasonic AG-HVX200 and would like to start using a P2 workflow. I use a SignVideo 6×1 firewire switcher to send either the DA-MAX, the MiniDV deck (a JVC BR-DV600UA) or my Pioneer PRV-LX1 DVD Recorder to the Mac. I only have $4,300 to spend, and I’d like to get another card and a reader.
Any and all suggestions are most welecomed.
    Thanks,
    Agnes

I’d buy the new MacPro 2.8 Octacore machine with a Intensity Pro card. The Intensity Pro will digitize over component, s-video, or composite and will take the place of the firewire box that you have.

But the new MacPros have got to be about 6-8 times as fast as what your using currently. It will really me nice.

Well, then work backwards from what you absolutely need. That converter still works fine so no reason to replace it unless you absolutely want to. If you really want something new, then go with an AJA Kona LHe as that will work with all your formats, but personally I would go for more computer and keep the ProMax unit for now.

Walter, I agree with you I want to upgrade my FCP and my Mac. I need to get as much bang for my buck as possible and was wondering how to configure the new G5 (RAM, RAID, graphics card, etc…), with some money left for a P2 card and store.

I’m not sure if you are saying you want a P2 Store. If you have a laptop, you’re better off using that to transfer your P2 cards to a hard drive (much less $$). You can transfer with Mac or PC laptops. We have a MPB and use a Duel adaptor which plugs into the Express Card slot. If you have an older Mac or PC laptop, P2s can plug directly into the PCMIA slot. You’ll need drivers from Panasonic . There’s a great program called P2 Genie that will off-load P2 cards easily and safely. I know it works with Macs, but I think there’s also a PC version. Panasonic has a program that works with PCs, too.

    John,
No I don’t have approval for a laptop. I plan on purchasing a new MacPro to replace my Dual 1Ghz PowerPC G4. I guess I’m looking for buying advice on the best configuration of the G5 with maybe some money left to buy a couple more P2 cards.
    thanks
