new equipment?
Posted by Kent Beeson on January 15, 2008 at 8:58 pmI was thinking of getting whole new equipment, starting with a new MAC Pro 3.2, but it seems like I need to wait til after April as there may be new this and new that – ie, blu-ray burners, new DVD SP, etc. What to do? If I were to buy a new mac system now, would Apple update, upgrade varous bits of hard/software free or at low cost for those who buy something now?

Nope, Apple will not update anything. It’s all on you. You can get a BluRay burner today for just over $500 so there’s no reason not to purchase a tower today.
Mac Pro’s seem to be coming out about every 12 months so what April might bring is a built in BluRay burner which I’m betting will cost more than $800 to add as an option.

January 15, 2008 at 9:54 pmJust do it now. You can wait forever looking forward to the next big thing. When you need an edit system you just have to make the decision to get it and never look back.
I purchased a Mac Pro 2 months ago and now they’ve updated them. Do I regret it? No – it’s still a great system. I just bought a 23″ Cinema Display and they’ll probably update it pretty soon. Will I regret it then? No – it’s useful to me NOW. That’s what matters.
And no, Apple won’t do anything for you when they announce the next greatest thing. Apple stores do however give you 15 days to return something if they update the product for a new one… but even then I believe you pay restocking. And I don’t think that’s for the online store, just brick and mortars.
Just my two cents.

January 16, 2008 at 12:06 amI’d upgrade now, but personally, I wouldn’t spend the extra $1600 on the 3.2 Ghz processors. I’d much rather put that money somewhere else like a AJA capture card, better storage, etc.
