A good replacement for PVM1440 monitor
Posted by Kim Rowley on January 14, 2008 at 9:22 amIt’s time to replace my trusty PVM 1440 monitor that is connected to FCP via the AJA I/O analogue composite connector. Any suggestions? A BVM level monitor is out of the budget for now. I do not do heavy duty color grading. Anyone using the Sony LMD series of monitors? Are there better options?
Dual 2.7 GHz G5, 4GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9650, Xserve RAID, AJA IO, 2 20″ Cinema Display, FCP 5.1.2, OS X10.4.8

Look at TV Logic. I haven’t written a full review yet, but I did write up a blog entry on a test we did here with it.
The 24″ is in the $8,000 range, but the 17″ is probably more in your price range.

I have not heard much good about the Sony’s and the ones I have seen personally have been terrible.

January 14, 2008 at 12:01 pmThanks Walter. I’ll do that and in the meantime hop on over to your blog. I just need to see if that brand is available here in Europe. I’m not familiar with it but I have been a pure Sony gal up to now. Thanks for your rematks about their new series of monitors! If/when you have time I posted a question on the Broadcast video forum and I’d be interested in your trusted opinion. I would have loved to post it here in the FCP forum because I value so many opinions here but was afraid to since it doesn’t only regard FCP.

Yes, it is available in Europe as I first heard about it from an IBC report and on their website they do list European distributors.

January 14, 2008 at 4:05 pmFound a distributor right here in Rome. Oddly enough we have purchased other equipment from that very distributor in the past. Isn’t the Cow wonderful 🙂 Thanks Walter!

Wonderful! Ask them if they will bring a demo unit so you can test it out before you buy.
I’ll look at your other post and respond this evening when I have more time.
I must come visit sometime as I have a lot of family in southern Italy who have been asking me to come and see everyone. We’re thinking about a Mediterranean cruise next year actually.

January 15, 2008 at 12:56 amYou might also consider the following monitors:
JVC DT-V24L1DU
Panasonic BT-LH2600W
Ecinema FX seriesThe price range for these are about $3000-$4500. They’re all 24″ monitors or larger.
I looked at a Sony Luma series monitor about a year ago and it looked horrible next to the Panasonic BT-LH1700W.
Now you need to realize that I currently don’t own any of these monitors. About two years ago I found a pair of Sony CRT PVM-20L5 monitors and they’ve been great.

The Panasonic is more like $6,500 to $7,500 from what I was quoted last month. None of the lower end eCinema displays have impressed me to date. I have not seen the JVC, but one of my VARs wants to bring one up here for us to test and I think it might be that model.

Panasonic lists the BT-LH2600W at $5000. B&H Photo Video has it listed for $4000. Maybe you were quoted with extras?
I’m waiting for NAB to compare the eCinema FX to the other monitors in that range, but it lists for some where between $4000-$5000.
If TV Logic is at NAB, then I’ll look at them too.
