[PDesign] “I’m working with a first time FCP editor”
There are a lot of things that could be causing it for a first timer. Make sure he’s rendered the file in FCP. Ask him what his sequence settings are. What does the graphic look soft on, a broadcast monitor, QuickTime, FCP preview…?
The more info you can get from him the better chance you have of walking him through what he’s doing wrong.

You should be able to just match the sequence settings to match the clip and start editing. Because it is a non standard frame size, if you have an card for video output, it won’t be very compatible.
But just set up your sequence settings a you should be good to roll.
One note is that you might want to turn the quality of the PhotoJPEG sequence to something like 98% as 100% renders take up a lot more room. When you finish editing you could turn it back to 100% for final delivery.

1. Double check your settings by reconfiguring the easy set up.
2. Try a different firewire cable.

Under Sequence-Render Selection add a check mark to the yellow proxy. Now when you render, it will render the yellow.

I would suggest the 2.8 Mac Pro with the Nvidia 8800 GT graphics card (or the separate ATI X1900 XT). Buy your RAM and additional hard drives through someone else. (I like crucial.com for RAM).

Yes. It will.

A Mac Pro with a beefy graphics card will handle those apps better, but the MacBook Pro will still run them.
For video out, you should consider the Matrox MXO.

I must have misread some of the articles the came out this past week. Will your players support playing dual stream video? Do they have internet connections to allow access to online content and downloads? (Those were some of the features that are either out or coming out in the future.)
Now I’m definitely no pro for the new HD formats. I just pick up a PS3 a couple of nights ago to play back HD content. Now I’m just trying to figure out what’s the best file format for it. Any suggestions?

Another thing to consider is how the Blu-ray specs are changing. Features were just added that essentially make all existing Blu-ray players but the PS3 out of date. I think Apple is planning for the Blu-ray 2.0 spec. They’ve had plenty of time to work on it with DVDSP receiving such a small update since NAB 2006.
